Thinking about this week's assignment got me to thinking back when I worked as an orderly at a psychiatric unit to help pay for my way through college. It made me think about a couple of sad souls who were so obsessed with cleanliness they washed their hands for hours at a time. I tried to capture that feeling with the shot below. Comments and criticisms are much appreciated.

Hi Steve........as an inpatient psychiatric RN with many many years of experience (too many to admit to) I'd like to say that you not only had a great idea for this WA, but you imaged it beautifully. There is stress evident in the hands and that's how folks with serious OCD wash. I like the lighting glow and water splashing off the hands as well.
Great job
Peter

Hi Steve, great shot!
Totally agree with Peter, the white-knuckle tension tell the story beautifully…

You set this up very well. Nice lighting. The water flowing off at the bottom looks great.

Hi Peter,

I am glad you picked up on the tension in the hands. I should probably give the credit for that to the model (my wife), however. She did a great job of capturing the ritualistic washing and she is a clinical social worker who has worked with several such clients. I really appreciate the kind words.

Hi Trent,

Thanks for the very kind words. I can hope for the finals, but I am always surprised when one of mine makes it. I still have so much to learn. I do really appreciate your encouragement and you upbeat attitude. It is great having you around the WA.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Hi Carrol,

Thanks so much for your kind comments. I am glad you liked the water at the bottom. It took a few shots to get this the way I wanted.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Steve, as a Massage Therapist, I to have to wash the hands all day long! I love the concept. To be a little picky, I would be curious as to what this would look like without the dish bottle in the back ground otherwise, great shot you have here.

Hi Steve,

I appreciate your kind words. The bottle in the back is actually a hand soap bottle, so I left it there intentionally, but it is so blurred that isn't at all clear. Maybe I will reshoot, but I don't think it is so bad. We'll see if my model (my wife) will cooperate with shooting again. Anyways, I appreciate the feedback.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

Good one Steve. I understand the theme well, I had a relative who always wanted to put things back in place even when things were already in the correct place!

Shooting water is a real pain. And you did it beautifully.

Now I got ask you, how long did you have your wife wash her hands? The hands are looking a little pinkish--suitable to the theme. However, did she have ANY skin left after you got done?

Good luck,
Chad

Hi Chad,

No damage to my better half at all. I had it planned pretty well. She had just worked out, so lots of blood moving in the extremities, and she just held her hands under hot water for just a second then we switched it to luke warm. I also brought out the pink in post-processing a bit. Thanks for your kind comments.

Best wishes,

Steve S.

I think this shot conveys the tension associated with this type of compulsion extremely well. I have two minor suggestions: Have you tried cloning out the square object to the left of the soap bottle - I think that a complete void in that upper left corner might make the soap bottle more obvious. The second is to clone out the faucet handle above the left thumb. (this suggestion I am not as sure about). I really like the reflections from the faucet handle on the right side of the hands, but for some reason, the highlights right above her top thumb draw my eyes away from the hands.
Disclaimer: I am just a hack, so feel free to completely ignore my comments. I do think the picture as it stands is really great.
