, a fly by night company like Visible Dust, posing as an expert at how Canon contstructs their cameras? Those jokers market 2 dollar ART BRUSHES for 83 bucks--well, I guess once you fall in with shysters.....

That's rich.

The two posters have noted junk around the sensor, not Visible Dust. I don't see how what Visible Dust says about it has anything to do with it (and who cares?). Seems to me to be a bit of a gratuitous whack at them.

The junk shouldn't be there and any brush, including your "art brush," would make a mess of the sensor if there is sticky stuff there. The goop should not be there, needs to be removed, and if it is from Canon, they need to remedy the problem.

I considered those brushes when they first came out but I've been using (when necessary) a sensor swab and Eclipse for three years or better with no problems at all. The sensors aren't made of some flimsy material. With a little care anyone should be able to clean their sensor, its not rocket science. But as a favor to anyone out there I'll clean your sensor for $50.00 (you pay shipping both ways). Easiest money I'll ever make.

Reread the posts. Nothing gratuitous about my what at them at all. They've earned it with thier rediculous products and laughable website. Visible dust runs their business on nonsense and quasi-scientific tripe. They sell 85 dollar brushes you can pick up in an art store for 2 bucks. As far as 'gunk' near the sensor, the ONLY place I've ever heard such nonsense is.....related to claims by visible dust....a group of folks who are, in my opinion, shysters.

Let me guess, you paid 85 bucks for one of those silly brushes, that's why you're so passionate in your defense of the indefensible.

Huh? Johny, just to be clear, do you think there is nothing special about their brushes, or do you not believe in the static charge? (I believe their brushes do get charged with electricity, I have one and I've felt it. I think there is nothing very special about their brushes, but they are selected to be easily charged, as I'm sure most nylon brushes can be, and they are also clean and soft, so the price is for not having to hunt them down and clean them.) Lastly, do you not believe that the chamber walls can have oil deposits? (Again, I do because I've encountered this problem. There is an easy work around; just don't touch the sides of the chamber with the brush.)

So can you be clear about what it is that you're so skeptical about?

Specialness of brushes?
Static charge phenomenon?
Usefulness of the static charge phenomenon?
Presence of oil on chamber walls?
Don't believe any of the above?
Believe all of the above, but find the price laughable?

I decided to try a fun (but if I screw up expensive) experiment. Im in the middle of a desert right now so ill be getting plenty of dust in my camera. I ordered an arctic butterfly and once I saw these posts I ordered a standard art brush.....you see where im going with this..........

Ill post my results in a few weeks when everything arrives

the equivalent nylon art brushes i see in art stores are not $2. add a zero and then you'll be about what i see for the wider brushes. that's without the spinning motor too.

There is an article on line, which i can't find right now, describing a fellow's pursuit of a good art store brush... He describes his method of selecting and very importantly, cleaning a nylon painter's brush. The big take away ideas are that these brushes should have nylon hair to take a static charge, they must be very soft, and they must be washed thoroughly because they usually are shipped with a sizing material to hold the bristles in a nice looking shape, and the sizing will get all over your sensor if not washed off the brush. The article describes several sequential washings and then describes testing the cleanliness on the face of a ND filter and revealing still more crud. So, if you go the art store route, be very, very diligent about the washing of your brush.

Please re-read the post from Aziz earlier. Here is the part that is important and to which I referred:

"it gunked up my sensor because the brush picked up the residue/oil from the sides of the sensor. "

The fact that the "gunk" was there had nothing to do with Visible Dust nor is anything they say about it relevant. How it got there, and if it came that way from the factory is not their issue but Canon's. Blaming that on them is, in fact, gratuitous.

I'm not "passionate" about them. They just work as advertised. If you don't like them, or if you want to go on a search for a brush, make sure it is clean, and then find some way to charge it up AND make it all portable and in a nice package - knock yourself out. Me? I don't have the time or inclination to do that and can afford it so the cost/benefit is pretty clear to me. YMMV. Other than that, I appreciate your concern for my finances but really don't trouble yourself.

Had it been available at the time, I'd have also considered the Sensorsweep from Copperhill. That said, the VD package is still nicer and better for traveling.
