Thanks, Phil. Very useful info.

How do you find the sharpness is with the Mark III? I've heard some initial reports that MKIII images need more sharpening.

Thank you for a nice review there, Phil. How big is the average converted tif file from that camera? The typical tif files from my 1Ds MarkII is around 92MB.... I am expecting to get a 1Ds MarkIII before Christmas. Maybe I should shop for a couple 1TB external drives in anticipation, huh?

Great review - lots of work in that and it's appreciated.

I'm wondering what you use for wide angles?

I picked up my 1ds3 same time you did and my 16-35 (which I always knew was a bit challenged) is pretty darn grim on a ff. At lunch I got what at first glance seems a decent copy of a Sigma 12-24, but the jury will be out for a while. With my 24-105 it's what I expected (very good), and I'll look at a 70-200 2.8 tomorrow. This weekend will see some prints.

Steve - The best I can say is that you can sharpen the image more than a 1Ds Mark II image and get more detail out of it. The 1Ds Mark III raw file holds a ton of information.

Joshua - I'm not at home, but I think it was 130mb per image or so.

'Hi Tim,

Wides are going to be challenging with this body. So far I'm getting nice and sharp results with my:
Canon 24mm f/1.4L
Canon 35mm f/1.4L
Sigma 14mm f/2.8 - I have a strangely sharp version of this lens.
Sigma 15mm f/2.8 FE

I still need to test my not so great Canon 20mm f/2.8 and my 24-70mm f/2.8L.

I'll be using a 16-35mm f/2.8L next weekend. It's the MKI, but it should let me see what quality to expect.

Wow, 2 stops of high ISO over 1Ds Mark II, that's a great news.

Thanks for the work.

Enjoyed seeing the shot of "Bob's." I'm a Toluca Lake boy, myself.

Thanks Phil for your time and great review. My take is apart from the higher resolutions and better high ISO, all the other improvements like better battery, better layout of buttons, better lCD, Liveview, 14bit and the list goes on adds to the new model. I can't wait for mine to arrive

Awesome Sir. A few comments.

Is that banding in the low res jpg of "Cold Dry Leaves" present in the RAW file?

The tonality on and composition of "Duck on Duck" is gorgeous.

Lovely work. Thank you for the effort.

Phil,
Many thanks for the fantastic photos and the review presentation.
Your skill and insight add much to the dialog on this fantastic new body.
I picked mine up this evening, and will give it a run for its money tomorrow.
Now that I've seen your excellent images, I don't feel the need to run out tonight and start shooting!
I KNOW it will work!
-Bill

Wonderful review Phil. It was one of the better reviews I've read this year (though not on this particular camera). Really enjoyed the "down to earth" feel.

Thanks!

BTW, where were most of the nature images taken? I recognize Westlake park (our church building is very close by). Were they all taken in Los Angeles?

Thanks everybody. I'm glad you enjoyed it or found it useful.

Here are some answers.

Jammy Straub - I just checked the Cold Dry Leaves photo and pushed the web resolution one up 3 stops with a levels adjustment. I don't see any banding at all. There's none in the raw image either. You worried me there for a minute. Where do you see it? Or maybe what are you viewing this on? I've printed that image earlier and there's nothing wrong.

Jason Joo - The landscapes were shot in the valley. I'm a valley rat (Northern Valley) myself and know the mountains and landscape here like the back of my hand (if it was covered with trees).

Overall I'm pretty happy with the camera. The hard part is actually putting the money up for one, but in return you'll be rewarded with a great picture taking machine.
