Since keeping her hair in place is a constant mother-daughter struggle, I thought of this when the WA theme was presented. As a play on all of our desires to fix things that are "our of place", I wanted to create an image that would make any photographer (or mother) want to fix the out of place piece. Not sure if the tension succeeded, but it was a fun shoot Please feel free to critique. I always appreciate the advice -Amy

Hi,

It worked very well, and I do feel the tension. Good luck.

I really like the lighting and I think you captured an image the falls right in line with this weeks challenge. Because you mentioned that input about the capture would be OK, I spot two things I might have done different. For me, the top frame of the glasses cut a bit too close to the eye. This is most noticeable in your daughters right eye (left as we view the shot). In addition, a slightly sharper iris in her eyes would really create a central point of focus. As it stands, the soft light and focus really works well for the mood and skin tones. I'm just thinking that sharp eyes could create another dimension
for the photograph and really draw viewers to a definite focal point. I do like the shot overall.

Hi Amy,

The lighting on this shot is terrific and I love the expression that you have captured in this shot. Definitely an interesting take on the WA. Good luck this week.

Great idea - and with a bunch of daughters I can sympathize. You might check the rules, however and re-size this so it fits - longest side MUST be 640 pixels. This one is slightly larger.

A good idea indeed! I might try to change the lighting a bit though, her chest is a bit too bright, especially if you want to focus on the hair/face

Thanks, Scott! I suppose tension is an expression most mothers can elicit in their daughters

Thanks so much for the critiques, Bob. I do agree about the glasses and the iris. Here is another shot that I almost posted ihnstead, but I was concerned that it was too obvious how unruly the rest of her hair really is, and therefore defeated the point of the photo. If you have time to comment, please let me know if you think this is an improvement. Thanks!!!

Can someone tell me how the rules work for posting anohter image in the post that is meant for comparative purposes. I see others do this, but I am not sure how this jives with the rules of the forum. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated

Thanks -amy

Thank you so much, Michael, for poitning this out. (I have chagned it). I frequently post on the macro forum where everyone want to see detail, so my default export process focuses on keeping the image under 200 Kb with as big a size as is possible, and I had forgotten to change it for the WA post. Thanks!

Yes. I agree. I tried to recover as much as possible in pp. I created this problem because the first shots I took created a very harsh shadow from her glasses. So I moved the umbrella to focus the light slightly from underneath, which led to OE her chest. I am not sure if I will be able to convince an 11 year old to let me brush her hair, put it up and sit for this again, so I may have to let it stand as is. Thanks so much for the valuable feedback though!

Hi Amy,

I am not sure which shot I like better. I like your daughter's expression a bit better in the first one (more exasperated), but I like the glasses up a bit higher in this one. There is a little bit of glare on the glasses in this one as well. All in all, I think I like the first one better. It is a very good shot in my view. As far as the rules go, I know I have been guilty of posting a second shot here, myself. The rules actually say if more feedback is needed before posting, then submit to the photo critique board. I have interpreted that to mean that if you have a choice to post and do so, you can put up an alternate shot and explain why you went with the one you did as you have done here. So, IMO, what you have done here is fine, but perhaps more experienced members or Fred will set me straight.

Hi Amy,
Im so lucky to have boys, I think. I like the first as it reminded me off my eldest when he was a teenager and had that `Im standing here but not listening to you expression.` I would normally agree about the glasses and focus but here i thought it worked well. Teenagers dont like to look you in the eyes, they will look anywhere else when your talking to them. Taking the focus away from her eyes said to me her focus was elsewhere and not with you.
Best of luck whichever you chose
Take care
Mark

Hi Amy,
This is a very effective shot. I like the look you've capture on the young lady's face. The lighting is very nice too. Well done.

Hi Amy! As one of three sisters, all of whom had hair that drove our mother wacky, I can totally understand your daughter's exasperated look. GREAT capture! I didn't see the first one, but I love this one. She's a cutie pie, too! I'm so envious of all the members with models in residence.

Super concept, and I think the lighting is lovely. (Just get that size thing handled, and you've got a winner, my friend!)

Thansk so much for catching my error. I am embarassed that I did not double check the image when I thought I had exported the correct size the second time.

Thanks also for your kind words, Philly!

Very clever, Amy, with a model whose expression shows that she undertsands your concept. Very nice!--Frank
