PS: Back onto the technical side of this subject, if anyone actually has experience with BOTH the Spider3 and the Xrite i1 Display2 (Eye-One Display 2) I would appreciating hearing about it!

I'll second that. Is there any difference in funcionality, does the Spyder calibrate the luminance values also?

It's just that it seemed for the past few weeks that Jerry has stalked every thread on calibration, plugging Spyder as the best calibration tool, seemingly contradicting anything to the contrary.

Wow, you have WAY too much time on your hands. But it seems you're "stalking" these same exact threads. You obviously don't see it, but you're doing exactly the same thing you're accusing him of. It's a forum. People ask questions so that people with knowledge of that product can answer them. Simple as that.

Uh, so after wading thru all this, if I am going to buy a calibration package, what's the best choice currently?

I chatted today with an independent reviewer who is quite familiar with monitor calibrators. If I understood him correctly, I believe his view is the Spider3 hardware is best but the Eye-One software is the best software. Bottom line for him is the differences between the two systems in the real world are negligible. I think his position, were I to paraphrase it - is that we are all (certainly me included) are placing a lot more significance on this issue (the BEST monitor calibrator) than it deserves from the standpoint of improving our photographs.

On the Apple ColorSync Users forum there is a discussion on this topic (limited real technical comparison data). The Marketing Manager for the Spider3 indicates there are real technical improvements in the Spider3 over the Spider2, and appears to be saying that they are allowing other companies to write software for the Spider3.

I'll have to jump on the Spyder2 bandwagon of not being so hot. Used it over a period of months and never delivered something exact, and each calibration brought a new color to it. Very weird. Then I read about the same kind of issues on FM (even in this same post), and over at SmartShooter. Decided to just get the EyeOne Display 2. Much better device.

I read though that the Spyder3 is supposed to by much better than the Spyder2. I couldn't honestly say I've ran into a photographer that I've met that has been satisfied with the Spyder2.

There are also different considerations in calibration for inkjet printing and critical color matching for press.

For what it's worth, WHCC recommends the Eye-One Display 2. With that added input, I just placed an order for one through Amazon.
