p.1 #1 · Filter quality Hama UV Haze

Hi,

I need a new UV filter for a new lens I am going to buy (EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM; see another thread). I was wondering though if there are any quality differences between different brands.

For example I see the following brands:

Canon 77mm UV Haze Filter (L-39 Sharp Cut) € 49.99
Hoya UV filter HMC Super Ø 77 mm € 49.99
Hoya UV filter HMC Super Pro 1mm Ø 77 mm € 72.99
Tamron UV filter Ø 77 mm Multi Coated € 39.99

While Hama sells a 77mm UV filter for about half (or less) the price (± € 23,-) of these filters above.

Will the cheaper Hama filter possibly have a negative effect on image quality? What is the difference between these brands/filters?

Thanks

Yup. Cheaper filters tend to have more problems with flare. I personally would not buy any of those listed filters. Run a search for filters here for lots of reading material.

Take a look at the B+W UV MRC 010 at hvstar.net about $53 and better than any on your list.
