I've had pretty good luck with my 180 2.8 shooting at about 1/500th or 1/250th of a second at f/8. Most people overexpose the moon trying to get the rest of the night sky. It was a bit tricky getting the moon and the star into the same shot, although in this case Regulus was bright enough to show up with a little teasing in PhotoShop
Here is the original picture from this posting that Beverly and Bill commented on. I decided that the other shot better matched the theme and effect I was trying to achieve.

I hope you don't mine if I disagree, but I really like the original one better. I think the texture of the moon makes it more interesting...if you crop it (and rotate it) so that the composition is close to the one you have posted now, I think it makes a better entry.
(But, that's just MHO, and my advice is cheap! )
Very nice Tom. I agree that the simplicity of the image has great merit. You've done a nice jog with the moon, it's a difficult shot to try. Well done.
