In photoshop I added a curves adjustment layer, clicked the white on the plate with the white selection tool, then masked out everything but the plate on that adjustment layer.
Then I added a second curves adjustment layer and repeated the process in reverse, selecting the cap for white, and masking out the plate. Hope that helps 
P.S. This is a quick adjustment, so it's a little overexposed in light of the two curves layers. You might need to darken the image with a levels adjustment layer before adding curves.

Jason, that's a great job! I hate to confess, but it's probably obvious....I'm a PhotoShop rookie! I don't know an 10th of what it can do, so what I usually post is pretty much right out of the camera....other than a little sharpening, and tweaking with Fred's 'Velvia Vision.' I don't even know what curves mean. (duh)
I'm learning, though! From you, and some of the other great folks here who are always willing to share the 'how to's'! Thank you so much! I wish I could post YOUR image as an edit.
