Welcome! What an interesting photograph! I bet that this would be great in black and white with the sky blacked out. Did you try that I hope that you will stick around and learn and have fun with the characters here on the WA.

Thanks, Jane. I fiddled with your suggestion a little, and it's really nice. Do you have a good but quick way of selecting the sky?

Interesting work Dudley.
To select the sky you might try selecting a channel with a lot of contrast between the tree and the sky, maybe the green channel. Then go Select>Color Range You might get good results. You'll probably need to change the lighting direction using either dodge and burn or painting black and white on a layer with a soft-light blending mode, or some other such method.
