because, even if you can't figure out what to shoot., just thinking about your weekly assignment can spur or morph into other concepts and ideas that can make for good photography. Don't let them pass you by. I shot this little piece tonight while thinking about "slow motion". I'm no model and have limited lighting but I did the best I could with no help in the shot below. If you are new to the WA don't worry about not being good enough. It is an assignment not a competition. Make an effort and it will show through in your work. I promise.

Just asked Mrs. Flibble, she seems to think you're pretty model worthy, just not quite up to the physique of the Flibble. She likes flab, not nicely toned torsos that look good in great shots like yours.

I participate in the WA (when I get the time) to try things I wouldn't normally try. Never thought I'd be taking a photo of myself on the toilet but needs must, I guess.

I wonder if there is a place for non-entry posts about the WA. In some ways I like that it is all about the pictures and you have to put down what you think in context of an entry. In other ways this is a real community that might benefit from something that might handle communications better.

Just an idea, maybe not a good one.

I finally have my wife trained what the "Whaa" is and that Monday in crunch time.

AH, Mike. First if all let me say, as an expert--and in Flibble's own words--that is complete and utter rubbish that you aren't model material. Oh my word--now that we have the drooling out of the way--it is a great shot. But more than that I appreciate that you said this is not a competition. It is about being better today than we were yesterday. About our friends here that we may never see in person and about sharing a bit of our souls with each other. Not to beat them, but to share ourselves. Community and communication--making memories. Life, huh

Incidentally, I regard myself as an expert, because I am getting ready to marry the best looking guy on the planet

Great image.

I shoot for the WA because I am usually too busy to get out and practice on my own. The structure of the WA forces me to get the camera out....I've only been dabbling in photography for about a year...and the WA helps me to put into practice what I have learned from books or the one studio lighting class I took at a local community college.

Mike, great shot. I wasn't sure if the avatar pic was you or just an avatar. Now I know it is your face. Brad Pit should worry. Anyway, nice photo. It was particularly striking for me since I have been 3 weeks on crutches and another 4 weeks to go according to the doctor. For me it has been letting go of doing all the things I wanted and needed to do, and accepting the fact that my life physically is truly in slow motion for a while longer. I don't think I will have a problem letting go of my crutches when the time comes. But, crutches as a philosophical idea, I am sure I have some thinking to do on that, as may we all.

Speak for yourselves, guys!! Enough of all this gooey touchy-feely stuff! I enter the WA SOLELY to beat the likes of Mike, Jane, Jim, Robert, Fibbs, etc. (the list goes on and on).

Seriously, I enter the WA because it forces me to shoot photos every week, to better my technique, (so I can beat all you great photographers) and most of all because of the wonderful camaraderie we all share. I, of all the people here, particularly appreciate the lovely community we belong to. The outpouring of love and support when our precious son passed that we received from so many whom I've never met (except by looking through their eyes every week) was overwhelming and is something I will always treasure. I don't get to thank you all for your kindness very often so here's a special "Thanks again" to you all and to Mike for starting this thread! And to Fred, for making it possible!

PS My 17 year old daughter is still drooling over your shot (Just like Jane, except Jane is about to get married while Csilla doesn't have a boyfriend yet (over my dead body. )! Good heavens! If you don't think you are model material, Mike, I wonder what you think IS model material?

Mike, as someone who has only be viewing the site for about three months and only been participating for the last three weeks I agree with all of the comments. To anyone who is newer than I am this site and the individuals who participate offer helpful and offer workable comments. It really seems like a place where everyone is here to learn, despite what Endre said. Winner is just the icing on the cake. Good luck to all.

I hope we're not all preaching to the choir... I don't know if I set a record by participating in over 100 WAs, but I do know my photography improved. And maybe I need to start again by getting it up to snuff....

Early on, there were many discussions as to what it should be stressing, Should everyone shoot the same subject and display their EXIF? Thankfully it took the other route whereby art and interpretation won out.

It continues to amaze me how 100 people can come up with 101 + interpretations of a subject and have it well executed as well. Aside from the "forcing" us to get out and shoot, I believe the true strength of the WA is to force us all to think and to imagine.

To imagine how we're going to take the shot, to think how to process it, and finally to be amazed at what our fellow colleagues did in turn.

By participating, we are all winners. Even if Vipermike continues to blow us all away...

I know exactly what you mean Mike, it can be intimidating at first because the standard is so high, but that makes you think more about what and how you shoot. As we all look at each others images we learn from the good and the bad and the comments they get, we learn from each others mistakes and gain from each others experience.

I don't have time to join any local Photography Clubs or go on any courses, these WA and MA's are invaluable to me to help me learn and make me think. Yes, I want to win (like Endre), I am competitive, but more than anything I want to take part, learn and have some fun. Some weeks I've had (to me) a great idea and have done my best with the entry, other weeks I have put something in for fun and it is on those weeks I learn more. When I look at what people have come up with when I have struggled, then it inspires me and makes me think harder in the subsequent weeks.

Like many I have struggled this week, but seeing Mike's post I made the effort and went out, and I'm really happy with my entry. It's not going to win, I doubt if it will make the finals but I remembered previous WA entries, ther composition, their colours,and what I had Iearnt from them and I tried to come up with something that conveyed the WA.

I know what I really wanted to shoot but I had no access to a nice big empty dark room where I could set off a long exposure with someone cartwheeling and a flash firing six times. Whether I would have pulled off that shot is another matter, but it got me thinking.

Fred, thank you so much for keeping this post. It is an honor to shoot with every one of you!

Here's the irony, I have no idea what to shoot for this assignment I am trying, trust me!... Mr. Flibble, got any more of those green pills?

I tend to be hard on myself., but you know what? Even if I can't come up with anything That’s ok. I have learned much this week!

Mike, I don't want to be too blunt, but why don't you kill the frame on that image you have in this thread and use it as your entry? Seems to me that it fits just fine. You ever been on crutches? (I suspect you have). I'd say you captured the frustration of someone on crutches...the limited motion, the slow motion that are a consequence of getting around on such things. Just my opinion....FWIW

Mike, I think the image is excellent, too, and Jim is right! You should use it as your entry. I hadn't come up with anything, and finally posted a lame entry today.......LATE!

But, after reading this thread (and thank you, Adam, for pointing me in this direction...I didn't see it when it started,) I am glad I gave it a shot, anyway.

I learned a lot today.......that my arm is almost too short to hold a bottle of ketchup in front of my camera, and squeeze it, while trying to look through the viewfinder...was the main thing. (That and I shouldn't wait so long next time!)

This is a great thread, and I love what our friends here have said. I can't tell you how good it is for me to have you all in my cyber world. There are very few people I share my photography with, so you're important to me in a multitude of ways.

I have the same sentiments that many have expressed. There is so much to be learned by emulation and by direct comments of your work. There are many very very talented artists here. I have really broadened my photographic horizons here on the WA. I would encourage all who are thinking of posting to do so. I remember just a year or so ago drooling over Ironabike's,Tom Basore's, Strad's and Relms's pictures. I started posting and it forces me to think about different photographic techniques and subjects I wouldnt otherwise try. This is one of the best places on the web for photography.
