I've never bought a camera when it was first released. Any ideas if the 40D will be back-ordered? I'd hate to pre-order online only to be put on a waiting list, but I don't know how available/expensive they're be locally (Milwaukee, WI).

It will be hard to find well into next year,
but not as hard to find as the Mark IIIs will be,
assuming a major 40D flaw is not suggested by a well known pro photographer
Many buy from BH or locally who ever gets it first,
some I bet are on more than one waiting list...

I personally don't think it will be difficult to find. Canon has been very good about availability of their consumer bodies. I remember the 30D shipping in good volume right when Canon said it would. Now I suspect the 40D may be more exciting for folks than the 30D was, so the demand may be higher, but I still think there will be plenty of supply (short of the discovery of a flaw that Canon can't quickly diagnose and fix).

This is my first time on a waiting list of any kind. For me the release comes at the same time I'm shopping for a new body. Those willing to wait a couple of months may catch a winter rebate session.

I doubt that the 40D will be on the rebate list so quickly after its release.
