If you need to buy a camera now then buy the 30D but if you're not in a hurry, why not wait if the price of the 40D is the same or less for newer technology?

That 17-55 lens sure is a beauty.

If you're after image quality only, the 30D + 17-55IS should be a fair amount better than the 40D + 18-55 IS. The lens makes the biggest impact on IQ. Now, if you need higher burst rate and a better AF system, with a slightly larger viewfinder and larger LCD, then go for the 40D.

You should wait until full reviews of the 40D come out in several weeks to see how substantial the 'in the field' improvements are.

Be that as it may, the 17-55 2.8 IS is an awesome lens (sharper and more useful zoom range) than the 24-70L. The vast majority of users paid Euro700 for the 17-55 and are happy with it. No one pays more than Euro50 for a basic F4-5.6 kit lens generally...

So, assuming that all you have is E1600, in a way you're asking whether or not the 30D is a better buy at (E1500-E700)=E800 vs. a 40D at (E1600-E50)=E1550.

IMHO this means that the new kit lens (which you know is NOT 2.8) and the additional features on the 40D would have to be pretty charming to make the new combo worthwhile.

Or do what everybody is doing, which is to get a 40D AND a 17-55 2.8

Why not get a 17-55 f/2.8 IS and an XTi. Then upgrade to the 40D when it is convenient later (and prices are lower). This will give you the best images and most of the important features of the 40D.

Huh?

Just what are those "most important features"?

The Xti does not have the improved CMOS sensor, or AF, or custom functions, or FPS, or LCD, or VF, or 14bit ADC, or weather sealing, or improved VF info, changeable screens, or top LCD, or dual control wheels, or wifi grip, or live view, or motorized shutter for up and down. Did I miss anything

Oh it does have the same ineffective dust removal feature- I guess this must be the "most important" feature that the Xti shares with the 40D

Seriously, the 30D is a better choice if you need a camera now. If not, wait for the 40D.

Gene, you're making it sound like the XTi is a pinhole camera. But it's not: it does have more or less the same CMOS, has adequate AF for most users, decent FPS, LCD, VF, 12bit ADC that used to be good enough in even the 1Ds Mk II but all of a sudden is crap, a grip and the shutter goes up and down as well I believe. And don't be fooled by the marketing thrown at you: the 40D isn't a weather sealed body like a 1D series, it merely has some added sealing at a few of the places that didn't cause that many problems in the first place...

But I agree that a 30D would probably be a better camera for a lot of serious photographers when compared to an XTi

Gene ... Ditto on Emile's comments. I was just offering a alternative economical suggestion for someone on a budget. I will be picking up a 40D at it's intro and really doubt that I will see any difference in IQ over my current XTi for most shots. Only time will tell. There were other options that are also interesting like a Tamron 17-50 matched up with 40D.

Perhaps I went a little overboard, but the way you stated it- it seemed as though you think the 40D is an Xti in a new body.

Which I pointed out is far from it. As it should be. Since they gave the Xti the AF from the 20/30D they needed something to differentiate the 40D from the Xti.

It's actually more of a jump from the Xti to the 40D then was the jump from the Xt to the 20D.

It's way more camera with many more features that a lot of people will consider important.

I know I would like one. It seems like a big enough improvement over the 30D, just for the VF and AF improvements.

For now I'll just have to make do with the ole 30D

I really want an 85L. I wish Canon made an 84/1.4 for about $700

used an xti didnt like it much at all. Preferred my old 350D (plastic fantastic toy camera) and having played with and tested much prefer a 30D (a real slr). The 40D seems a good camera and would get one however the lens is the most important addition on your camera so a 30D and the 17-552.8is cant be faulted really.
