Rush job, but I hope it's fun. C&C welcomed. Haven't had any time to clean up the image or play around.
Gotta run, catch all of you later!

I really like this Photon! The color of the pan really makes a nice background to the tomatoes!

What a size contrast!
The large tomato seems to be floating away from the minis with a great 3D effect…

Very nice job keeping everything in focus. Sometimes a shot like this will have a shallow DOF. You have done a very nice job keeping everything in focus.

Thanks Brenton! I was on the road, saw the miniature tomatoes and the rather large tomato, and knew I had a subject. I was given a few dishes to consider, and this one was the most suitable.

Thanks! I didn't have any lighting equipment with me, so I borrowed a flashlight, darkened the room, and "painted" during a 15 second exposure. I did have my white balance standard with me [WhiBal], so I knew I could get accurate colors.

Thanks Tom! Oh yes, those large ones taste wonderful! I don't know if the miniatures are good for more than photos. They were apparently the result of some kind of gardening mistake.

Thanks Mike! I tried to envision how I would set up a main light, fill, and kicker if in my studio, then tried to achieve that look by moving the flashlight constantly and adjusting the relative time that it was in various positions. Surprisingly, it only took a few tries to get this.

Thanks! I was in the mood to do something with bold colors.

Thanks Bill! On my studio monitor, it looks the way I had hoped, and I will likely leave well enough alone.

Thanks John, I was very happy to find objects that would give the size contrast without need for exaggeration or alteration. I figured that cross lighting would separate the big guy nicely, but having to do it with one flashlight didn't fill me with confidence. To my surprise, the whole thing worked nicely, and pretty quickly too. I'd just returned to base from a trip to the Met Museum of Art, and had a little over an hour before leaving again. I conceived and created this image, got it up on my web site, and made my FM entry during that period. Whew! A laptop can be useful.

I played with different compositions, and settled on a kind of compromise between maximizing the strength of lines and keeping the main items close to a focusing plane. I used f/22, a stop or so beyond where I would go for ultimate resolution, but with this camera and focal length combination (1DMk2, 24-105 up in the telephoto range) the detail is very good in the full sized image, let alone in a web reduction, and the DOF was just sufficient to cover everything that mattered.

Very good photograph, Jess. This is one that you can hang in the kitchen. My only nit pick would be concerning the material underneath the dish. I would prefer that it be a little less sharp so that it doesn't conflict with the subject. That notwithstanding, I like this shot very much!
