Has anyone had a chance to get their hands on one of the new PENTAX DA 16-50mm F2.8 ED/AL (IF) wide angle zoom lenses yet? They are very close to being released and I thought someone with "connections" might have been able to get a preview. I'm hoping this will be a step up from my 16-45 f4.

Vistek (Toronto/Calgary) shows the lens on their website for $999 cdn with a release date of July 23rd...

Rumor is it's co-developed with tokina and if thats true it's a bad sign since the new tokina 16-50 2.8 reviewed on photozone got pretty poor writeup especially when it comes to distortion and CA.

According to the Photozone review the two lenses were definitely co-developed but it does note that the Pentax version will appear in a "slightly different incarnation". Let's hope that there is enough difference to make the Pentax worth adding to the bag.

im getting the 50-135 around the beginning of sept....

im assuming it is also co-developed as it is from the same series/release....

the slightly different incarnation is that the Pentax will have an SDM motor. at one time, Pentax reserved its SMC coating technology for itself, but since it started licensing the coatings to Hoya a few years back (Hoya Super HMC filters) and then to Tokina recently (the most recent incarnation of their 100/2.8 Macro and newer lenses), there isn't much optical difference between a Tokina and a Pentax lens anymore. it does mean that i can get them in Nikon mount though without a quiet in-lens motor.
