Now I gotta know. How come? Is the phonetic 'mark four' somehow offensive in Japanese?

Not offensive but rather ominous/bad luck. Phonetically "4" sounds similar to "death" in japanese.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_numerals

(And note that 40 doesn't have this limitation at all, that's why Nikon has a D40/D40x and the 30D successor will be 40D.)

Pictures? Who wants to do that? We just buy, sell and brag about our equipment here. (That's photographic equipment guys) As for the "other" cameras, I didn't think Nikons counted as cameras....

Anna, I think you have totally missed the point of owning camera gear.
Pictures, while sometimes interesting or beautiful, are just a side effect.

Let's at least get this right...

How about:

The "1Ds" for the IDS
The "1D MkI" for the 1DMKI
The "1D MkII" for the IDMKII
The "1D MkIIn" for the 1DMKIIN
The "1Ds MkII" for the 1DSMKII
The "1D MkIII" for the 1DMKIII

There are D1's, D2's, and S2's out there in other lands. Some of the names posed above will immediately be rendered duplicitous as future models are released. If we'd just call them what they are and make fewer posts per day, the carpal tunnel issues would all be mitigated in the end...

I posted some stuff from 2 weeks ago, is that okay too?? (Didn't have time to sort out the whole take.)

See here: Old industrial details, in City, Still Life & Abstract.

1D3 - EOS 1D Mk III

d/Reb - Digital Rebel
20D - EOS 20D
350D - EOS 350D
XT - Digital Rebel XT

I hope you don't want me to list all the lenses too!

Sheesh, a digital rebel is a 300D, so why bother with trying to shorten that? Same for XT and XTi, that's 350D and 400D

But, go on, list proposed abbreviations for all lenses too

This being a mainly American user site they use the Digital Rebel, Rebel XT/XTi reference. I forgot to list the Kiss abbreviations for our Japanese users, though it could become confusing using Kiss when describing one of the XXXD series cameras!

"I have a problem with my kiss can you help me?" Just doesn't sound right.....

It depends entirely on who's asking

This is my thread. No lens abbreviation suggestions allowed... Fred doesn't have enough bandwidth

A bit more characters to type, but a lot less possible confusion.

(Ye gods, I can't believe I replied here )

That works for me. For once, I'm not going to read past the first page. This way, 1Ds3 will be clear, there's no confusion with the Nikon Dx series, and all we've done is replaced some Roman numerals with Arabic.
As a side note, if you're confused between the D30 and 30D, stare at your camera body for a moment.

I think that Tentacle has proposed a good convention, which is already in common usage, but nobody has yet defined it in terms of the real camera names that Canon uses, so here's the list (it only includes actual products).

EOS-1D = 1D
EOS-1Ds = 1Ds
EOS-1D Mark II = 1D2
EOS-1Ds Mark II = 1Ds2
EOS-1D Mark II N = 1D2n
EOS-1D Mark III = 1D3

I also like the Roman numeral system (e.g. 1DII), but I favour Arabic numerals as they require fewer keystrokes.

From now on, I'll try to conform to the Tentatcle Canon Digital Camera Naming System (TCDCNS), but what the heck do I call my 5D ?

Think of all the carpal tunnel syndrome cases that will be avoided...

(It takes the intelligence of a criminal lawyer to come up with these brilliant ideas)

I thought by definition all lawyers were criminal?
