On the following nomenclature:

The "S" for the IDS
The "D1" for the 1DMKI
The "D2" for the IDMKII
The "N" for the 1DMKIIN
The "S2" for the 1DSMKII
The "3" for the 1DMKIII

Think of all the carpal tunnel syndrome cases that will be avoided...

(It takes the intelligence of a criminal lawyer to come up with these brilliant ideas)

Although we are in a Canon forum, you have managed to list 2 other cameras from two other manufacturers in your attempts to shorten the names. How is that going to simplify things when making comparisons, or say for some of the newer people?

Not to spout of at the mouth or anything, but I always felt the model numbers provided by canon were easy enough.

Though I do a fair bit of typing in my daily routine, so the extra key strokes really don't bother me. If you're worried about extra typing, imagine the extra keystrokes involved in telling everyone - newbies and pros- that this is the 'new way'.

Just throwin that out there as a happy 2+3 'upper case' d owner.

While we're on the subject of making agreements, lets also agree that the 5D is awesome, and lacking representation in this thread (though the name is short and unique enough).

i think you have to keep the "1" in front of the name to avoid confusion with Nikon cameras. My only beef with the naming, is that 1DIII looks a lot like 1DII (i.e. multiple IIIIII can get confusing to count.. imagine when we are at 4th and 5th gen).

So if anything, I would go with
1D, 1D2, 1D2N, 1D3, 1Ds, 1Ds2

of course you will never get a consensus, and people will still just call them whatever

uuuhhhhh..........its called "Roman Numerals" IV, V, VI....and so on. There will never be a Mark IV though. Our japanese friends can explain why.

Yup, Canon's naming scheme is kinda strange. Tentacle's version is a bit less confusing.

D1 and D2 is part of Nikon's line. Fuji makes an S2 Pro and Canon makes an S2 IS P&S.

We may get the 1D(s) Mk III N and then the 1D(s) Mk V

The number 4 is considered to be bad luck in Japan because 4 (shi) sounds like death (shi).
