I recently purchased a Tamrom 18-200mm lens to be a general walk-around lens for a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. However, I've been wondering about the Canon 28-135mm IS lens, if it is a better lens for such purposes, ... primarily because of the IS, and being made by Canon. Would I be wasting my money to buy the Canon, when I have the Tamrom already? (I also own a Canon 70-300mm IS lens.)

Since you have the 70-300 IS already (and it is a nice lens, BTW) I would consider getting a zoom with a lower range to compliment the length you already have covered. The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is by far the best bang for the buck in the wide-to-normal zooms for APS-C. Much faster aperture throughout the range and incredible sharpness as compared to a super-zoom.

The other alternative to consider, if you really want a super-zoom, is the new Tamron 18-250. It is shockingly good for a super-zoom as far as Photozone.de is concerned. Just make sure to keep the 70-300 IS for your 200mm-300mm shots.
