As a mental health worker for many years I've come to understand how difficult the holidays can be for some. The feeling can be chronic, episodic, or temporary, and it's the most cold in the world............................
If you know someone feeling low or a bit out of sorts, reach out to them and this world will be warmer.
The difference is very real!

Merry Christmas to all my fellow WA FMers, may we spread joy to others! I apologize if my image is a downer for this cold theme......I'd like to think of it as motivating.
comments welcome as always
Thanks for viewing

Well, Peter, you certainly know how to make yourself LOOK depressed!! I guess spending time with depressed people has given you a good source for modeling that behavior. It's a very touching photo - certainly the best among all the depressing ones this topic seems to have engendered. Personally, I prefer a bit higher contrast in my B & W's but the flat look adds to the tone of the story you are trying to communicate. As always, you excel in your photo work!!

Fond regards,

Endre

Thanks Endre........I always enjoy self portraits to try to convey a mood, and it took a few to get the look i wanted for this WA. I played a bit with the contrast as you pointed out, but settled for a 'flat depressed' look
thanks for the comments, it's appreciated because i felt a bit 'out there' posting such a dismal image
regards
Peter

Peter, I know what it's like to have a profession which is less than uplifting this time of year. You are right...quiet acts of kindness are often the remedy. Nice shot and sentiment...Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Great shot Peter, I like it just the way it is. It evokes the washed out feeling one can get from the Holidays. The hype and commercialism seems to grow each year. Thanks for the reminding us of what the holidays are for and how it is possible to help someone else. It's good to be reminded that there are people with real problems, and that we all can make a difference in their lives. It's an uplifting message, and a great picture. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

I think your photo is very moving, and it surely suits your back story. You did a great job, and have a unique take on the WA. Very nice!

Inpatient psych is a bit of a drain during the holidays, what with having to staff the place on Christmas eve, Christmas etc......both the staff and patients take on a "let's get thru this" attitude and work together.
Thanks for the comments Tom

Very touching shot Peter. I'm trying to work out if the bright is something to fear or welcome.

A great reminder to all of us, on how many spirits out there are cold and could use a lift! Thanks!

Peter, your photo is a pictorial of the hurts that all of us have felt at some time or another in our lives. And for all of the sadness and frailty that our spirits go through from time to time, it is always the act of giving that seems to get us out of those times. Sometimes just our "being" is gift enough to others. After all, we are human beings, not human "doings" . So your gift to your patients and their families through your just being there and of course, your acts of kindness are certainly beautiful gifts to those people who are not as fortunate as we are. I bet if we look very very closely, we will see a glimmer of hope in your eyes, and the shine of love in your heart. Your compassionate spirit is a gift to us all. Have a special, loving holiday.

Jane

Philly, Christian, Patty, Tom, Mr Flibble, Caley, Jane.
Thanks to all of you for the generous responses to my image this week. As an inpatient psychiatric RN for the past 26 years I've seen alot of depression and emotional distress, I've often wished that I could photograph the people I talk to every day.....it would truly cover the range of emotions and energy levels. I wanted to portray one of these extremes in my image, using myself to mimic someone feeling lost or alone or overwhelmingly sad to match the cold theme, and from your response I was able to get that across at least a bit. I myself am blessed with a loving family and a rich life full of interests. Of course my emotions go up and down like the rest of the world.........I believe we've all been in a depressed state at some point. I don't want my fellow WA FMer's to feel that I'm somehow clinically depressed because of my picture however (so...this is my disclaimer)
Thanks again to all of you for your comments, and thanks for viewing the image....it's GREAT to share here!!
sincerely
peter

Peter correct me if I'm wrong but I think few truly depressed people would exert as much effort as you do in obtaining your WA submissions. I think you chose this partially to avoid the frostbite you incurred shooting 'Tracks To Darkness' in #231.

Have a great Christmas.
