Hi Andrew and thank you very much. I hate to disappoint anybody, but the whole process was definitely low-tech. I don't have anything against Photoshop, I just don't have that software.
I was showing a sleeve in my original version and wasn't really crazy about it. When I decided to add some contrast to the photo I was holding in the second version, I opted for the bit of watch band instead and liked it much better. I didn't want my hand/wrist to take up any more of the scene.
The whole thing was shot with in-camera sepia using flash outside after dark to get the black background.
The whole thing is less haphazard than it may at first appear. I wanted the picture to be held in my hand at an angle to keep the eyes level in the final picture. I did crop the whole thing to get the composition the way I liked it, with the photo held at an angle and filling the picture as it does, and the composition is basically the same as the original except for the no-sleeve and the photo with more contrast.
I liked the crop on the hand-held photo. By the way, I don't usually have that stern look on my face...I'm just a big ham and was going for a specific look for the shot.
: )
Thanks again,
