I wonder why it would have been the case. Blown-out has nothing to do with DR. It is an exposure issue. You can always keep the bright sky from being blown out with any camera.
Now, I guess your point may be that your dark area would have been completely dark, had you kept the highlight from blown-out.
It is just a matter of where the noise floor of your sensor is. RAW tools have enough settings to reshape the histogram without changing the range - Curve, Brightness, Contras, Fill light etc.
The default curve setting of DPP and ACR are a little aggressive to create the "punch", which often wipe out the dark area.
