Wow, thanks everyone! I wasn't expecting so many responses. I thought long and hard about lens selection, and my conclusion on the 35 vs. 50 issue was that if you start with a 35, you end up with one more lens than if you start with the 50. Essentially, when you get the 35, you need the 50 too, whereas if you start with the 50, you can jump to the 28. I will get the new 28/2.8 Asph later, as well as a Apo-75/2 and a CV15. That should be enough for me for a while.
I also just happen to like the 50's construction better than the 35, with the built-in lens hood. It also backs up as a portrait lens, and I think as an overall first lens, it suits my style better. Part of this is that there is lots of space in Berlin, and the standard 35 or 50 feel a bit short here, since people are normally spaced wider than in, say Paris, Rome or London. I preferred to get the 50 (=66) as a normal lens, and then add the 28 (=35) as a crowd lens later. If I had bought the 35 (=50), I would have skipped the 28 and gone to the 24, which would have crowded the purchase of the 21, which I am losely planning to buy at a later point.
This is all just forethought, so maybe once I start shooting for real this won't be accurate, but it was the best I could do in advance. Lens selection for the M is harder, because there are so many good choices, close together, and I was unsure how the purchase of the M8 would affect my shooting style. This is really a new chapter and a new direction for me, and in a sense much more serious than for people like Guy, RobS and others, because I am ditching my DSLR at the same time. It is a leap of faith....Show more →
Well, that does make sense. I wish you well on your leap of faith. You can always go back, but you will never know if you like something, till you try. Good luck Carsten and show us some pics.
