Chip,
Thanks for posting these and your impressions of the camera. I'll look forward to some samples shot in RAW once you've had a chance to play with it a bit.

Chip, congrats on the M8 and thanks again for the 180. I'm looking forward to your feedback on M8 image quality vs DMR, as I'm not sure which way to go if I wanted a digital camera.

That's great Carsten, looking forward to your impressions.
Please let us know if you experience those banding problems with spot light sources.

Enjoy your new toy !

Congrats Carsten! So why did you get the 50, instead of the 35? I would think it hard to go from using a 50mm on your 5D, to a 67mm on the M8.

Wow, thanks everyone! I wasn't expecting so many responses. I thought long and hard about lens selection, and my conclusion on the 35 vs. 50 issue was that if you start with a 35, you end up with one more lens than if you start with the 50. Essentially, when you get the 35, you need the 50 too, whereas if you start with the 50, you can jump to the 28. I will get the new 28/2.8 Asph later, as well as a Apo-75/2 and a CV15. That should be enough for me for a while.

I also just happen to like the 50's construction better than the 35, with the built-in lens hood. It also backs up as a portrait lens, and I think as an overall first lens, it suits my style better. Part of this is that there is lots of space in Berlin, and the standard 35 or 50 feel a bit short here, since people are normally spaced wider than in, say Paris, Rome or London. I preferred to get the 50 (=66) as a normal lens, and then add the 28 (=35) as a crowd lens later. If I had bought the 35 (=50), I would have skipped the 28 and gone to the 24, which would have crowded the purchase of the 21, which I am losely planning to buy at a later point.

This is all just forethought, so maybe once I start shooting for real this won't be accurate, but it was the best I could do in advance. Lens selection for the M is harder, because there are so many good choices, close together, and I was unsure how the purchase of the M8 would affect my shooting style. This is really a new chapter and a new direction for me, and in a sense much more serious than for people like Guy, RobS and others, because I am ditching my DSLR at the same time. It is a leap of faith.

Well, that does make sense. I wish you well on your leap of faith. You can always go back, but you will never know if you like something, till you try. Good luck Carsten and show us some pics.

Carsten,
I bought the 50 Lux asph about 2 weeks ago and really really like it.
I think together with a 24 or 28 it is a very flexible and nice combination.
However if its your only lens right now I would probably have started with the 28mm first. Just personal preference. Enjoy the 50. How does it focus at f1.4?
Show as some images if you have the time.
Cheers, Tom

Cograts on your M8. That is a leap of faith alright . I don't think I would be able to do that. Why don't you hang on to your DSLR system for about a month or so before selling that DSLR system. You still can fall back on it, just in case, without incurring that much loss, if any. I am sure people would love to take the M8 off your hand..... Just a thought.

Tom, I am having trouble focusing, but the occasional shot is really sharp, so it is just me so far. I do seem to be improving slightly, but given that I am still at work (!), it will have to wait until the evenings. I would have liked to get the 28/2.8 Asph. as well, but it is on order, so I will have to wait.

I do plan to hang on to my 5D a little, but already, when I am careful, the M8 shots are a little sharper than the 5D shots. The noise is much higher on the M8, at least on the little screen on the back. Even at 640, and maybe 320, it looks like more noise, but I will have to verify at home. The noise has a nice quality to it though, and given the strengths of the M8, I don't regret so far.

I will do more testing and also try to reproduce the banding and purple fringing and see where my camera stands. It is firmware 1.06.

Congrat's on the M8 Carsten, like you I've taken a leap of faith ditching the DSLR's for something a little more refined. But while the noise above 640 does not worry me, I am starting to sweat a little regarding the banding. Your tests should make for some interesting reading.

Enjoy!.

I am really surprised that nobody that reported banding seems to have used the relevant filter in Capture One. After reading most of the excitement on the forums across the net I came to the conclusion that we are talking about a relatively minor issue imo.

The viewfinder magnification of the M8 is less than that of the typical film M cameras, making it a tad more difficult to focus. Since you have an f/1.4 lens that is optically great at larger apertures, chances are you barely stop the lens down, creating shallow DoF. If I am not mistaken, the M8 uses 0.58 or 0.62 or something like that instead of the standard 0.72. You should consider getting a magnifier, like 1.25 (Leica) or 1.3 (Japanese version) for easier focusing. I plan to put one on permanently on my M8 when I get it.

Is the banding apparent on high ISO shots only? Is that similar to those of the high ISO shots of a bearded man that Paoletto took?

I believe you would find it worthwhile to get the viewfinder magnifier for the M8 to help with the focusing. I am in touch with one of the early reviewers and he definitely recommends it.
