Hmm, the crop seems to be sharper than the non-cropped image. It looks like it was taken with a short tele and fairly wide open or even completely open but not sure about the FL. I hope that Phase One will work together closely with Leica and release an updated C1 before too long after the M8 is released.

Go to PhaseOne site and you would find that they already support the M8.
thanks Guy. The pic looks really good. The out of focus areas look nice. Leica days are on this weekend in Denver. our rep promised to show us all new leica models. I can't wait.
Looks very impressive and the skintone is very accurate - could I be alowed to draw peoples attention to the OOF area to the left of the lips - a tiny hint of posterisation perhaps. Given that Leica glass is acclaimed for it's wonderfuly smooth OOF areas I hope the sensor can recreate perfectly smooth gradients. (and nope I'm not seeing this on an LCD) What's it look like on your screen Guy - this may well be a function of the Web as well.
Thanks for the link Guy - looks smooth as butter now. Pixel peepers may find some colour aliasing on some of the fine hair strands if they turn NR off but that is just nitpicking. Very impressive image quality.
these can't really be full raw since they are only 10Mb files. It may be 8bit instead of 16 bit
all my DMR files are 19Mbits
so I assume this is STILL not the true IQ
it will be better! No No Victor ERROR # 1,234,567
NO! I just checked and full size image 16-bit is 10Mb. there must be some added comression going on (hopefully non lossy)
I wonder how they got another factor of 2 out?? (DMR files are all 19Mb
The M8 shoots lossless compressed DNGs. If you take a DMR file, run it through the DNG converter and select lossless compression, it will get quite a bit smaller.
That's pretty nifty. So, with idea that battery life is about 550 shots (according to M. Reichmanns product manager interview on his video on LL) and a smaller raw file size (400+ on a 4G card) it makes for a very convenient carry-around package.
If one considers the horrible mixed and fairly low light at the Photokina stand of Leica the quality is pretty near incredible.

It is even more nifty: the frame counter displays the number of images left on the card - or in the battery, whichever comes first, the Leica salesperson at the Photokina told me.
Good to see you here! on the FM forum i have followed your comments on RF, which I am new to (both camera and forum), and I am glad you have joined us for comments here. I guess you are mostly RF from sigature but you have many posts here as well (I still consider myself a beginner here)
I also see mamiya MF in your signature. Do you know what the Phase Mamiya 'handshake will mean?
All in all though, I think this M8 is going to be a great street asset.
well, if that is what the M8 can do in poor lighting, at 320 ISO (near the limit of most backs, 400 where many are alreadyshowing shadow noise) and have uassable 100% crop, I think the hand wringing can stop.
of course, it won;t!
let's see, my prediction is: compalints about framelines.
anticipation is fun. We should all thank Leica for being slow to deliver - this kind of fun doesn't cost anything
Complaints will include; Framelines are too small for the actual coverage of the sensor, back focus /front focus problems, RF does not line up with infinity, RF patch flares out in certain lighting conditions, shutter is not as quiet as my M3, does not look like Tri-X on my prints, got me arrested on the street under anti terror laws while trying to capture the decisive moment. Leica have done a fantastic job with their first M digital - the M9 with a full frame sensor and 18mp it will be perfect!
Hi Viktor!
Always nice to find a mate Yes- I still have some 645 stuff, but has been gathering dust for the last few years. I have used it even to the extent of taking it on safari -including the 500+ 2x extender. The sheer bulk was daunting - but the projected slides amazing
Shirozina is certainly right, but I would like to add that those complaints about the framelines are pure user error. Leica frames are exact -if one knows how to use them. For instance for 50 mm: subject at 1m = inside frameline. 3m= outside frameline. Infinity: add 3 frameline widths. That will give exactly 98% coverage, like any high-end SLR. If only people would learn to use their tools....

I know this is heretical, but I am not entirely blown away by this. I think it must be the Leica glass that I don't completely like. It's something about the highlights. I don't really know how to describe it, but they seem kind of compressed, and this takes away the magic of the glints, and the reality and 3D. The eyes don't look wet. Am I the only person who sees this? Am I imagining it? The results often seem a bit like a beautiful dutch master painting, or looking through lead glass crystal. Technically perfect but somehow lifeless. Was it a Leica tradition to reduce contrast in order to help the film (now sensor)?
I am seeing exactly the same characteristics that led me to sell my APO-ROM 180f2. The 200f2 that I had wasn't as good in many ways but the eyes looked wetter and the image was just more believable, more sculptural, less flat. Someone tell me I am not alone, or I will have to get my eyes and my brain tested... ;-)
