Peter,

Nice job, esp on the skin tone. The lighting is good, but I wish the hand on the right were cropped more as I feel it distracts from the face. Still, I think this could go to the finals .

Thanks Ian.....I struggled with the right side crop. I think I'll leave it for now, await other opinions?? I like the balance as it is (personally)
Thanks very much for the comments

I like the crop as it is. I'd like to see more light in his eyes, though I know full well that's a difficult problem.

Great shot Peter. the detail is awesome, nice and sharp, good lighting. How did you achieve the lighting, were you using a flash?

Thanks

Thanks Jess........it was something i worked on, but this was a jiggly kid with handheld flash and handheld camera.....so this was the best shot as far as the lighting went. brightening between the slinky didn't go too well either.
I'm considering another idea altogether, but once i put a picture up it always feels hard to change.......as if I'm being disloyal.............
Thanks again for the comments.......always valued!

Hi Nick.
I used flash very close up......full blast..... in manual mode. Obviously the flash was off camera. It was handheld, as was the camera.
Thanks for the comments dude!

Peter, this is a delightful photo and it would seem to me to be a very complex capture. You have done a great job. I think if you cropped it, it would lose some or all of its dynamism. Of course, I haven;t seen it cropped, but that would be my impression. Nice job once again. Precious one too.

I like this picture. Well done! I don't think you need to crop it but the hand does compete for attention. I would darken the area with the hand so it isn't as lit up as the face. I think that would help isolate the boy's face and the slinky. I would also bump up the contrast around the slinky.

Thanks for the feedback Erich!
I've sparingly applied your suggestions and edited the entry, I agree that the contrast boost around the slinky makes the image more dynamic. I welcome any more feedback.
I've noticed over the past year that 'warm' pictures involving people are usually not quite as well received in the WA (they seem to be enjoyed, but not usually finalists or voted for).
I have a few very dynamic pictures of just a slinky, and am considering changing the entry, but haven't due to my love of the humanistic side of an image....Any Comments??
Thanks again Erich

Awww, the Slinky! I have spent many a day transferring a Slinky from one hand to the other and "walking" it down a set of steps. In this day of Game Boys and X-Boxes, it is refreshing to see a kid enjoying something so simple, and you have captured it beautifully. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Best regards,
Robert

I love this shot, Peter. Regardless of how people vote for shots in the WA, you've captured a really wonderful moment, here. I am shameless about using my kids as models for the WA. Sometimes they get in, sometimes not. I think there is a tendency for people to dismiss cute photos with kids in them as not being sufficiently "artistic" but then some of the grim stuff that passes for "Grreeeaat Aaaart" photography makes me wonder what is wrong with some people's thinking. Anyway, bravo!
All the best,
Endre

Great shot Peter. Sproingy.

Is this a new kind of modification you can get for your kids? Looks like it could be useful for seeing round corners and the like, although I guess it puts pressure on your eye muscles to both be able to hold it steady and be able to cope with the more extreme eye focussing requirements.

What's your next kid modification? Hopefully we'll see it in later assignments.

Top job.

robert........even a 'mini-slinky' such as this one seems to grab a kid's attention (and mine still)
Thanks for the comments!

Your images of your own children are superb, Endre...I love them all and you capture an essence in each of them that is always critical to the photo. I think that's the hardest photograph to make of all.......getting a human quality across to all viewers.
It's certainly more difficult than nature photography. The problem of course is it's a thin line between an image which communicates a universal theme, and a snapshot of someone you love. That thin line means you're taking a bit more risk presenting the image. This would apply to all art, i suppose, but more so with human subjects, i believe.
Thanks for the comments! (and the lengthy PM also)
Regards
Peter

Nice job Peter. I'm always a sucker for photos with smiling kids in them!

I like the way you can see his eye behind the slinky. Also, the way his hands are holding it, it gives it more of a playful feel looking through binoculars feel as opposed to it being somehow attached to his face (if you couldn't see his hands).

A bullseye. Love the expression of delight on the childs face, a nice mix of delight, curiosity. Well captured idea from a different perspective.
