My submission this week is for the Forgotten War. This photo was taken just south of the town of Suwon, Korea.
On July 5th, 1950 members of Task Force Smith, named after their commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles B. Smith, were the first UN Forces to engage in combat with the forces of North Korea.
The 540 man battalion sized task force of the 24th Infantry Division was rushed to Korea on transport planes and moved north through hordes of refugees and retreating ROK Army units to block the enemy advance. They were told the communists would flee at the sight of American soldiers.
During the battle the memebers of Task Force Smith were highly outnumbered and the North Korean troops made no attempt to flee.. Lt Col Smith made the dreadful call to retreat. The retreat was confused and several weapons were left behind. By the end of the battle they had inflicted 127 casualties upon the North, but suffered 181 casualties of their own.
This battle is memorialized by this bronze memorial on the site of the original engagement.
