p.1 #1 · My 3-lens system collapsed

All along my infinitely better half has been under the impression that I had three lenses only:
(1) wee one (e;g., 50 f/1.4, 35 f/2.0, etc.)
(2) chunky one (e.g., 85L, 24-70, 16-35, etc.)
(3) big white (e.g., 100-400, 400 f/5.6, etc.)

So, everybody was really happy with the situation, and nobody had any good reason to nag me about lens hoarding and such.

Then the EF200 f/1.8L USM came along. My poor wife even with her failing eyesight and a rather marginal interest in my shenanigans noticed the difference in shape/size between the "big white" one and the 200 f/1.8.
In the end, I had to confess to purchasing my "fourth lens".

Now I am tempted to get the 300 f/2.8 (again).......as long as the hood is off I can pass it for the "big white" one. Alternatively, with the hood on I can probably say it's the 200 f/1.8 zoomed out.

What would you do in my situation ? Go perhaps for the 500 f/4 and call it "my 5th lens" ?

Wow. I could have kept that up for about 2 seconds...

But before I got to the end of your post I was thinking 500/4!!!

I would say, get the 500/4 IS now! As hood on or off this can pass for many lenses, which leaves you open to the 300/2.8 or 400/2.8 as well, with or without 1.4x or 2x converters!

Yes, I can suffer a bit of pain now with the 500...however, that one would give me a carte blanche for subsequent acquisition of the 300 and 400 f/2.8 with total impunity. Of course, provided that by that time I am still capable of holding onto the monopod with those heavies mounted on it.
Old age ain't fun, trust me.

Yup... this actually has been attemped and worked for a while... keep lenses at a distance so that the 300mm and 500mm aren't quickly readable

By the same method, I morphed my XT into a 5D. :-)

Brilliant!

I should have thought about this. I've acquired the following within the last 12 months:

The Camera: 20D
The First one: (16-35mm)
The Second one: (24-70mm)
The Third one: (200mm)

I'm trying to 'prep' her for the the Fourth one, (70-200mm) but at this point I think I should have lumped the first 2 together and then seen if I could lump the 2nd 2 together... First 2 are both black, about the same size. Second two are both white, but not quiet the same size. Hrmm...

Youf method would have provided far fewer naggings I'm sure.

When I got my 20D (coming from a silver 300D), I just played it cool and didn't bring it up...my problem began when I got some L lenses....24-70 and 70-200 4L...didn't look quite the same as my 18-55, 17-35 2.8-4 tamron, or 75-300 III. Soon after, I got my 300 4L IS, which served me fine, until I bought a 200 1.8L...which was instantly noticed. Thankfully, the 300 2.8L which arrived 2 days after the 200 1.8L was close enough that i could pass them off as "1" lens. Sadly, the 400 2.8L is so massive that i can't just claim that it's the 200/300.

Same thing with my bodies really...300D with a grip (even if it's silver) looked enough like a 20D with a grip....which looked close enough to a 1D with a grip, which looks identical to my 1DIIN with a grip...haha

Nice, and enjoy your "4th" lens

lmao! I thought I was the only one to try this. Used the 300 2.8 for a couple of weeks without the hood... friends would make remarks while I changed the conversation Not one word to date!

Buy several lens cases that look identical, she'll never question a thing. You can keep a flask and other little things in the ones that don't fill up.

I think we've all just learned that certain things are not worth fighting over and "WHAT she doesn't KNOW", won't hurt "ME!" And than the old favorite, "It is easier to ask for forgiveness then ask for permission".
