Jack Kerouac was a writer and part of the Beat Generation . In his book On the Road he tells of being left off at a gas station, taking a nap while gazing at the Rocky Mountains, and getting a milkshake before heading off to Denver.
The gas station that he stopped at in Longmont is reputed to be this precast concrete structure that was known as Johnson's Corner on US287. Paul Verrizo has some pictures of that location. It was going to be demolished to expand CO-119, when it was bought and moved to the Prospect New Town development about a mile south on US287 from the gas stations original location.
The station sits on massive steel I-beams behind a chain link fence, that luckily had a small gap in it . A new foundation appears to be ready for the structure, but I don't know when it will be moved or renovated.
I have more documentary shots of its whole shape and current state of disrepair, with the dirt, construction supplies, new foundation, and the modern architecture of the surrounding development, but I thought this shot captured the spirit of the place. Since it wasn't open, I had to get a milk shake at the McDonalds down the road and took a nap when I got home. Not really the same.
