Remember when you could buy a dollar's worth of gas and have the attendant clean the windshield and check the oil, tires and battery? Ahhhh, the good old days!

I am glad I am the first to be able to say what a wonderful photo this is! As always your lighting is wonderful and composition superb. And I dont think anyone would believe that you could remember "then".

I agree with Jane about the lighting and composition. This is a great shot, I've only seen pumps like this in American movies. It make me thing that all petrol (gas) pumps are like this in America, I never see the modern ones. Those older pumps have more character though.

Robert,
Excellent photo and it speaks for itself, GREAT JOB!
I have one very big issue with your entry and that is, it was like a flash from the past that reminded me of how old I am.
My father and I would take a fishing trip to the upper part of Maine each year and I remember him stopping at a filling station that used the very same type of gas pump and yes all the services came with it including friendly conversation about the old roads that washed out from the rain along with fishing reports coupled with updates on weather predictions for the next few weeks.
Thank you for bringing me back to the good old days
Regards,
Tom

Nice shot Robert.

I particularly like the sun peeking through the space between the pump and the sign.

I remember some pretty old gas pumps, but I must say that this one is a little before my time.

Jane,

Actually I do rememer one of these pumps out in front of Davis Grocery which was in Ashland, Mississippi, the small town near where I grew up. But I was very, very young at the time.

Doug,

If all pumps in America were like this today, the lines would be very long, indeed. These old pumps were completely mechanical.

Thank you for your compliments.

Tom, it's amazing when you think about it, isn't it? Things were not nearly as mechanized back then, and yet people actually had time for conversation. .

Christian,

You are right; taxes, representing 37.5% of the total price for a gallon of gas, were high back then, but until the recent jump in fuel prices, they weren't much different. Today, with gas prices at $3 per gallon, federal and state taxes represent about 16% of the total in Florida.

I appreciate your compliments on the photo.

Beautiful colors and composition with the sun acting like a laser pointer emphasizing the ancient prices. Congratulations Robert, you’ve created a great time traveling photograph that immediately takes the viewer in a trip to memory lane…

John,

It is good to hear from you. I have missed your comments, and even moreso, your photos.

I appreciate your kind words regarding my entry.

Well, Robert, my friend, you've done it again! this one is a finalist for sure! Where did you fine this old pump anyhow? Since I'm wracking my brain for a subject to shoot, I'd be thrilled to run across something as interesting as this to work with. Bravo!
All the best,
Endre

Hi Peter,

The antique feel is, no doubt, helped along by the fact that this is a vintage gas pump from the 40s or early 50s, and I was fortunate to catch the late afternoon sunlight. It really was a good find, and worth the short drive up to the Alabama/Florida line. I am glad that you like it.

Actually Jane ran across the old station, looking like something from a movie set, in Florala, about 45 miles north of where we live. Florala is on the Alabama border and gets its name from both states - Florida and Alabama.

I am certain that you will come up with a fabulous idea as usual. Thanks for your generous compliment.

Robert

Beautiful old relic, I'm wondering if the gas would percolate through the glass chamber.
I've seen little glass windows on the pump, containing something like dice bouncing in the flow of gas, but never a big chamber.

Thanks, Flibble. I wish I could have pumped some gasoline into the cylinder, but I had to make do with sunlight.
