This is a New York City Emergency Call Box, they don’t have a handset, the user just has to press the ‘Fire’ or ‘Police’ button and speak hands free to the emergency operator.
I found this one on the service road of the New England Thruway near the Connecticut border; the picture was taken in a very cold morning at sunrise, when the sun just appeared over the horizon.
In addition to the low natural light I used fill flash set at –2.7 to bring up the box detail…

This is a great shot! The color and exposure are perfect. Well done.

John,

From the amount of wear that I see on the two buttons, I think that I will steer clear of this neighborhood. :worried: Good job with a difficult lighting situation.

Excellent observation by Robert -- a whole lot of button pushin' goin' on.

I like the idea and also agree that you did a great job with the lighting. Each week I look forward to seeing what you come up with, and you don't disappoint!

Thanks Robert!
A very good observation and decision… Did you notice that the Police button cover shows a lot more usage?
The lighting kept on changing as the sun went up and my fingers were getting way too cold for comfort on that freezing Friday morning…

Hello Ed, thank you!
Now I will really have to work hard to prevent any future disappointments…

Thanks Dan. I though that nobody noticed it and I’m kind of getting used to see it when the program starts up…

Thank you Jane, yes the cold is the worst, especially on your fingers, you’re so lucky to be able to enjoy such great weather all winter! I’m counting down the days to spring already…

As always, a fantastic shot, John!! The lighting is really superb! I don't think I've ever been up at dawn in my life, so I really admire your gumption in going out to get this shot. I suspect that all the bad guys were too cold and sleepy to come out so you were probably pretty safe.
Great entry!
All the best,
Endre

Thanks Endre!
You’re so lucky, I get up early even on weekends when I don’t have to, force of habit since I’m up at 5 every day…

You have got the lighting just right. Its hard to capture a sun on the horizon as you have, against the box. Great capture. Do these things actually stil work?

Thanks Gotsy, they probably work but I think it’s better to leave them alone…
