p.1 #1 · Canon 30D Big Mistake by Canon!

Who agrees with me that the 30D is a missed step by Canon? I predict slow sales from the start. I was looking forward to using it as a backup for the 5D until I saw the specs. An 8 megapix sensor.................................is Canon crazy or what? I will wait now and save my $1600 worth of disposable income. The Nikon 200D is far better in my estimation. Canon should have waited another month so they could upgrade the sensor to a little higher then the 200D. Then they would have had great sales. They are gonna loose big time. The only people that will buy are those that just have to have the latest version of a camera. I encourage everyone to keep their 20D and upgrade next year. What do you guys think?

Also I am not excited about the new 85L. Way to overpriced if you ask me.

p.1 #3 · Canon 30D Big Mistake by Canon!

i said this in another thread. copy-pasting here. sincere apologies for those reading this again.

lot of things have already been said. let me add my few cents.

Its quite likely that canon does not want everyone to upgrade from 20d to 30d. They wud be happier if (a) one upgrades to 1 series or 5d instead (b) dont upgrade and buy lens, flashes etc. instead. The latter locks one into canon like nothing else.

I think they also understand that its not affordable (to most) to upgrade a prosumer dlsr every 1.5 yrs. I think this move is quite sensible than it appears on the surface.

And probably they are not as worried about nikon d200 as all of us think they are. switching systems is no joke. and they probably have a hell lot of confidence in their lens line-up. A person getting into digital slrs wud probably look into the lowest model (350d rather than go thru the "30d or d200 thought process" ?) and the lens line-up, wont' he ? a battle that they probably win right now.

A set of potential customers for 30d can be (a) folks upgrading from 350d (b) canon film camera owners wanting to get into DSLRs.....and am sure this must be a huge group that wont think of moving to nikon. they already have the lenses and eyeing a few more. Yes...they can buy a used 20D...but am sure lot of them wont just because lot of people dont like to own a discontinued product anymore. And hey....what if they do ? thats fine. becos the person selling that 20d is going to buy something, isnt he ? a 1 series/5d or more lenses ? looks like a win-win situation to me.

just my 2 cents.

Does the 30D have:

1. A quiet shutter?

2. 1/3 stop ISO adjustment?

3. A sturdier CF door?

Those are the only complaints I have about my 20D, and fixing them really would make it just about perfect — especially with that dandy new 17-55 "G" lens on it. (Is "G" EF-s for "L?")

I don't really care about more MP. I think 10MP would be good enough for the bracket. I never really expected a major upgrade or improvement on the new model, the only thing that suprises me is the name really. Other then that it is what most of us expected from this new camera.

It has the ISO adjustment, which would be nice to have on both my cams instead of just the 5D

I agree w/ Nill, a quieter shutter especially would be most welcome. Sad to see that it is still "small" and will be using the same poorly designed grip as the 20D. Even after being repaired by Canon, my grip still had electrical problems when using a long/heavy lens. Never had any problem w/ my 10D grip.

Nice to see that it has spot metering though.

If it's so bad, sell your 5D and lenses and buy Nikon. I bet you don't. I also think you'd be a fool to buy an incompatible Nikon as a second camera.

I think it's a good long term move... this level DSLR is awful good. They refined a very good camera into an even better product for the same price point. They're making a paradigm shift... consumers will no longer think of DSLR bodies as something to use until something better comes along. Now consumers can start thinking about using it until it breaks. That's huge.

I think Canon is relying on the new 17-55 to keep and get new Canon customers. I don't agree with the megapixel wars, but it sure seem that Canon and Nikon do, as do Joe consumer, so the 30d really surprises me in its subtleness. From Canon's perspective, people who buy the 30d will now want to spend more money in a year for the next upgrade, or even the 5d in a few months. Money money money....

Was really hoping for the 5D focusing system with the hidden AI Servo points

When I say bad, I say bad compared to the competition, D200. It does not compare to my 5D by a long shot, so no I would not want a D200 over a 5D, that would be silly.

That's good news on the ISO adjustment.

I like "small." The 20D is my walkaround/hikearound/fisharound alternative to my 1-series bodies. Don't want a grip, don't want big, don't want heavy. It really is just right.

I also use it sometimes for kids' concerts and plays and such, and the loud shutter is a major annoyance there. So much so that, much as I hate to say it, a really quiet shutter on the 30D could be enough to make me trade.

10 megapixels would have been very welcome. basically i can get the same image quality out of a 350D (i do fine art photography, so burst rate and AF speed aren't of concern to me). give me a camera that can act as a master flash controller and we'll talk.

Reports seem to differ on that - Rob Galbraith says it doesn't have them, but I think Chasseur d'Image (forgive my spelling) says it does.

I disagree with you. The 30D is exactly what I suspected Canon would do. Incremental upgrade, lower price. It's competing with the D70, not the D200. The larger price gap between the 5D and 1D MKII leaves room for a mini-1 Series later on.

The 20D has been a great seller, and was the most pivotal camera dSLR Canon has released. They're just improving on a recipe that works well already.

If you guys keep expecting exponential jumps (D30 to D60, D60 to 10D, 10D to 20D) in camera functionality in 2006 and beyond, you're going to be disappointed. It's clear that the megapixel wars are cooling off, and we'll just see a steady stream of incremental improvements, and the filling of certain gaps.

Huge mistake? No. Is it the camera I was hoping for? No. Does it force me to a 5D? Probably, unless I have the patience to wait.

I just don't get all the 30D bashing going on....
Why is everybody so disappointed? The life cycle of DSLR is short, specially amateur cameras. Everybody knew there was going to be a successor to the 20D, so why did some expect some 20D/5D/1D2N-out-of-the-world-fusion-camera?
The 5D was a big shot, and is a huge seller. It was released 6 month ago. The 20D was up to be replaced, this has happened.
There might still be a market for another camera line, but they won't release that so soon, if they just did introduce a new line.

I'm done with 30D threads

Until Canon comes up with a 3D (EOS 3) with 20+ MP, full frame sensor, and a price tag of $1500 or less, I could care less. Min. upgrading on specs is just a marketing scam...
