The d200 isn't a better camera because it has more megapixels.
Play with one for awhile. It's just a better CAMERA. Period.

I'm sure it's a fine camera, according to Rob Galbraith the noise performance of the D20 is much better. And what surprises me that he likes the AF performance of the 20D better than the D200

To me it seems like the 30D is a very nice camera. The 20D is one of the best out there, especially at the price. I'm glad Canon didn't fall for the mp hype. Who needs more than 8 almost noise free mp's? Full time pros won't be buying 30D. They will buy 5D or 1-series cameras..

Canon's bodies of recent times (1D IIn, 5D, 30D) have been evolutionary in nature. Yes, the 5D gets the new chip, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that it shares some manufacturing traits with the 1D II's chip. The 30D is an evolved 20D, just as the 10D was an evolved D60.
This tells me that Canon is working hard on the next revolutionary change in sensor technology. Maybe.....
You could be right. It could also be the end of the 1.6x sensor in this line (excluding the rebel cameras).
Well, I doubt that this will be end end of the 1.6x sensor cameras. Canon has invested a lot of money into EF-S and they're not going to kill it off after a few short years.
Well I didn't exactly say they'd likely kill off the 1.6x sensor camera. I could see Canon, in 18 months time, bringing down the price point of a 1.6x prosumer camera, while filling in the 2000 dollar range with a larger sensor camera.
I'd be tempted if I were buying-into DSLR or needed a new one. Otherwise, I'll stick with my tried and true 20D for another year when maybe something more significant and tempting will come out like DIGIC III, clean ISO 6400 and improved AF.
I'd have to agree, for me not having made the move to a digital SLR yet, and having canon lenses I am certainly probably going to make the move and pick up a 30D though I'll wait awhile to see how the bugs shake out with the early units, and it's actual price, while it's not a huge improvement from the 20D, it does add some features at what should be a similar price point. Overall the 20D is already a great camera, that pretty much everyone loves, so it's not surprizing they didn't scrap it completely, and it's cost effective.
If I already owned a 20D, I don't think I would upgrade till the next version came out unless I just wanted the newest model, or some of the minor updates fixed a couple things that really really irked me about using 20D.
I think they will have a hard time selling new 20D's unless they drop the price below $1000, for me with the 30D costing say $1400 I'd need a lot of motivation to pick up a 20D instead.
I've already sold a 20D in the expectation of a newer camera, and as it turns out I'm happy with my decision. I would be even happier if the 30D (what a stupid choice of name) had the AF system from the 5D, but I'll cope with it as-is.
I'm hanging out now waiting to see the lens announcements!
8mp is fine with me. I would never need more. BUT I was expecting at least one big upgrade in 30d. Like 6 frames per second or better AF performance... ISO in viewfinder and spot metering are great but not worth the upgrade for me.
10d and 300d owners should jump on it while most 20d owners need to wait one more year.
I believe that there are many owners of 20d who would buy a better camera in a 1800-2000$ range. IMO if Canon is not going to make one in that range is making a big mistake. I can't justify 1d series and I don't need FF but I would love to buy something in 1800$ range.
The 30D certainly fixes all the minor complaints about the 20D, and turns it into a pretty solid camera, but it's most likely not worth upgrading from the 20D for most people.
I think it's a good thing Canon released the 5D. I think it's the most important camera in the lineup right now.
Are we expecting any new camera announcements, or is the 30D all we're getting for now? I'm excited about the new 85, and any other new lenses as well...
Probably wishful thinking, but wonder if D200 will push down price of 30D to about $1100 street (pretty likely) and 5D to around $2900 (maybe less likely).
The 30D is probably a very nice camera, but it seems uncharacteristically non-aggressive for Canon right now as the DSLR market is heating up.
