The shutter speed was 1/250, simply because that was the limit of my flash. The setup was actually quite fun so I'll share it with you guys.
The match was held in place by a clamp (which was previously on my fridge).
The camera was set up on a tripod and cable release. I prefocused on the match and switched to manual focus.
The flash was on the left and a white sheet of paper was set up on the right to reflect for fill.
The background was a black book, angled 45 degrees to the right (away from the flash) to minimize reflections back into the lens.
To light the match, I had a handheld lighter.. one of those handy things where you squeeze the trigger and a flame shoots out the end of the tube.
Once the flash was lit, I held down the shutter and quickly fired off a few bursts while the match ignited.
Settings were ISO 100, f11, 1/250th. That gave me the shot I wanted with enough power in the flash to fire off a few bursts.
