p.1 #1 · New camera purchase - 5D or 1D MKIIn

It looks like I'll be able to buy a new camera soon. I am looking at the 5D and the 1D MKIIn.

I mostly do portraits, some product photography. Very rarely do I do events. The camera will also be used for candids in family/friend situations, of course.

My lenses are:
17-40 f/4L
50 f/1.8
28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS
70-200 f/4L

What would you recommend?

Given your shooting needs, I'd say 5D or even a used 1Ds over the 1DMkII.

Some threads comparing various aspects of the 5D and 1DMkII:

There are more buried in the mists of time; this is a recurring question.

Yep, 5D is your ticket. Much cheaper than the 1DM2N now too...

For the kind of shooting you do, the 5D seems perfect.

Is the drop in price of the 5D indication that something new is coming out soon?

Yep I agree the 5D is your camera, plus the Mk2 is big and heavy for family stuff. I'm in the same boat, and I am considering the 5D as a second body.

No, the "got to have the latest toy" people got there's, so now the pricing is more competitive. Yes.... I'm one of those people.

The 5D is the camera you want. The high ISO capability will come in handy for those candids of family. I have both and the reason for the MKIIn is wildlife and sports photography. The 5D is my everyday body. Good luck.
