My 24-70L lens hood has a bunch of dust/crud that is sticking to the felt...any ideas on the best ways to clean this?
I dont really want to use a dusty vacuum cleaner on it...one camera store had suggeted scotch tape but taht might leave a sticky residue...ideas?

this really is the best technique...........i use this tape all the time. i use 3m tape for the body in that it lifts oil and dust right off without leaving a residue.

Believe it or not I tried this once before I figured out the tape after a linty micro-fiber cloth left a whole bunch of spots in the rear flocking of my 17-40 (where the rear element is). It was a pain in the a$$ -- trust me, the tape is the way to go.

Thanks to this post, I just notice there's felt in my 2004 135L hood. My friend's 2001 135L doesn't have felt, it's smoth for easy cleaning. So which is better, to have or not to have felt inside your hood. I like his because it's easy to clean, just wipe and you're done.

The felt (or flocking as it is correctly called) is designed to reduce reflection inside the hood by absorbing and scattering light. It's also used in Canon EF lenses between elements and groups to prevent internal reflections (or so says Lens Work III). In general, hoods that are flocked should be better at preventing flare from light reflecting off the inside of hoods.

The adhesive tape style lint roller works good but leaves lines on the flocking from the edge of the roller.
OMG am I that anal? I guess so.
The blue painters tape is probably the best, and is more controllable that rolling the clothing style roller around the inside of the hood, which actually makes me feel like I'm going to peel off all the flocking every time I do it.
