Not sure if this is a repost, but it's good to getaway from the D200 etc....
I started off with a Nikkormat EL, was the best camera, ahh the memories.
Then the F2, with the MD-4 damn that was heavy, F3, F4s, F100 and now D100 (d100 will my backup body to the D2X or D200)!!
The first Nikon I ever used was my mothers old Nikon F. Then I borrowed a F4, then my dad got a F100 for his company that I used, not until after that did I actually buy my first OWN Nikon, which is the D70. Now I borrow the companys D2x hehe... It's good not to own the stuff, less worries, more usage!
A black FE2, ca. 1986, was my first. I keep it because it's still the best tool for some work such as super long exposures in remote places. The match needle meter is a wonderfully clever design. And, of course, the viewfinder is the bomb. I can't tell you how much I miss using my FE2 and F4s viewfinders compared to my D2H.
I bought F-801s (just sold then Pentax SF10 my first AF!!!) just after they turned out. Pefect camera for me, met the ground hard couple times (I almost died to see this ...) with no harm at all !!! Then processing costs of film\prints killed me as I'm not earning with photos. Now for almost 1 year D70 in set with 24-120 VR - the camera that feels so good in photographer's hand... I really like Nikon for this. Dream of D2x , but what I have I love as it is still more that I need
D100, I shot EOS film well if you call a roll or 2 a year shooting . Then I assisted my friend who is a pro and got to borrow his F4's and enjoyed the approach of Nikon. When the D100 came out I was very near first in line at 2200dollars no less
The D100 was my first Nikon camera ever... I've had it now for over 2 years, I had heard about it for over a year, and had been tracking Nikon's digital SLR's since the release of the D1, and I had owned a couple of Sony digicams, up until that point, but I really felt like I needed more, and that getting a DSLR was the path for me.
My second was a film body - the F601, my third was a used D1 - which I bought in September of last year, and sold in March of this year, at which point I got my D2h. At some point I would like to get another pro body - but not making any leaps at this point.
I bought a Nikkormat around '73, but it pretty much got destroyed by sand. I still have my father's F3HP which looks the worse for wear, but operates fine. Then I switched to Olympus for a while - the OM1, which I loved and the OM4, which I hated. In January 2002, I bought an N80 and last October, a D70.
F2 photomic w/DP1. 1972 with 55mm macro lens. Black body, when I gave it to my daughter 6 months ago it was "brassing" in all the right places. GREAT. Now, F5, with DP30. Same solid performer. LOVE MY NIKON!!!!FILM, FILM, FILM. "MaMa Don't Take My Kodachrome Away"
