I have recently had to Format my HD and start from scratch reinstalling all my software.
I have all the versions of Capture loaded and it works, only it comes up with "Trial Version" and, to my knowledge, I have loaded them all in the correct sequence.
When I try to enter my KEY ( mine was an early one consisting of all Alphbetics ) I get the prompt:
"Unacceptalbe Character..You can only type a number here"
Capture went to an all-numeral key with the launch of version 4.3.
To get back up to speed you need to download some encryption/activation files from another website (the name escapes me at the moment.)
In my case I went through the same situation as you. I simply called Nikon Tech Support and they walked me through the process quickly and efficiently.
For the process to work, however, you'll have to provide your old "alpha" key.
wait wait wait. The same thing happened to me. I called Nikon and they told me to install the software i bought 4.1 and activate it using the alpha characters, then preform the upgrades. You won't have a problem other than uninstalling and reinstalling. Hope that helps.

I thought I did that, but it's worth a try again.... thanks!

Terry,
I have done this abaout a half dozen times by now. You must have missed activating your early versions (before 4.2). You MUST activate 4.1 with the alpha key. It's a bit of a pain, as you have to install at least three updates in the proper order to get it to work (I have to start with 4.0, because that's on my original CD).
I had a similar problem. I contacted Nikon support and their instructions, which worked, were :
"Install the full version of NC 4.0, then the upgrades to 4.1, then
4.13. Shut down PC and restart in in Safe Mode by booting and hitting the F8 key. Start NC in safe mode, put in your key to register, then upgrad to the 4.2 version and reboot."

Yeah... For a 100 bucks you'd think they could send you a complete update CD after the 4th or 5th update. I've gotten CD updates for free for other software providers who's software cost FAR LESS than what Capture did.
I appreciate the updates, but this is a hassle every time XP hiccups... ....which of late, seems to be every other week.
Welcome to the electronic age...
Just try to keep track of all your little mods, updates, actions, filters, macros, support software, etc.... not to mention the donation to the computer store for their best guess, I mean expertise..... what a pain in the a$$.
