p.1 #1 · Once, just once, I would like Nikon to up Canon.

Can someone explain what the quote above really means.

How can Nikon up Canon or visa versa? Both make good cameras, and good lens lines.

Let's say that the D200 comes out with a 9 MP CCD or CMOS chip with the following bells and whistles:

1/500th second flash sync
5 FPS for up to 12 Raw or 25 JPG
A pro-style viewfinder in terms of brightness
Capability for both a wired remote and a wireless remote.
Portrait Grip available as a secondary purchase.
WI-FI Capable..
Enhanced Dynamic range, as good as the D2X.
MSRP $1999 US

===================================================

Looking at the above does it up Canon? Even if the 5D were to come out the answer is still "it depends".

Why? Because it depends on what you want. And that is true regardless at to what you say.

If you are talking about upping Canon in a PR situation I really believe you are fighting a losing battle. Canon wages Marketing wars with amazing efficiency. They flood the market with their camera ads. No offense, but how often do you see a Nikon ad during a televised NFL game? I think I have seen a couple, but only for the D70, and with no celebrity endorsements.

The fact of the matter is that Canon can release a hamstrung product like the Canon EOS 300D, as opposed to the Nikon D70, and still sell a boatload of them. Why? Because hanstrung or not, the 300D is still a nice product, and Canon has no qualms about spending a multi-million dollar ad campaign to gain traction.

I see Nikon ads during baseball games all the time, in fact, Shea Stadium is lined with Nikon stuff. I think there are a couple more baseball games than football games It's also funny to see mostly Canon shooters in the press box surrounded with Nikon marketing propaganda Do you think they really care? Why does it matter if Canon outdoes Nikon or vice versa unless you're a stockholder? Nikon pushes Canon which in turns makes Nikon push back, it benefits the consumer when there is competition. We should not give our loyalties to camera companies like they are sports teams...

Hi David,

That is why I stuck to Television ads. Not being all that close by to a local Professional team, it is hard to evaluate the advertising that may go on in an actual venue.

I agree with you about the whole argument. For me it is all about what is good for me, and if that happens to be Nikon great, if it happens to be Canon for someone else, that is great too.

Well, I am talking about TV as well, since it is all over the backstop and whatnot. NYC is one of the largest markets in the world. Not bad that 81 times a year, here alone, Nikon has its ad on the tube for a good 2-3 hours But then there are Canon commercials during football games. They both market, who cares?

OK, so Canon spends millions more for advertising and sells more cameras than Nikon.
However, Nikon still managed to quadruple their profits recently.
It`s quite possible Canon really needs to spend millions more to get their name out there to garner these sales from all their newly introduced products..

I`m not about to suggest any recommendations to Nikon`s marketing dept.
Seems they already know the formula for sucess.
The highly regarded Nikon brand name recognition is no doubt still working very well for them and simply has to pull plenty of weight with the average consumer and for this reason Nikon might be able to get away with less advertising. Not a bad thing for them.
Just a thought.

I'm not trolling, I honestly want to understand what some of these people who want Nikon to release a Camera that will UP Canon?

What's the point? I mean it honestly sounds like they want to be able to talk about gear instead of just shooting pictures.

My D70 runs just fine, and while someday I would like a D2X, I'm not making installment payments or anythin.

Who cares who is ahead of whom really? Both systems, in their current state, and quite capable of meeting the needs of real photographers. Unless Nikon released a 35mm full frame 20MP supercamera and priced it at less than a D2X, you are never going to convince most people on that other board that Nikon has 'upped' Canon in any respect. There are now threads over there talking up how the vaporware that is the 5D is a much better camera than the D2x, solely by virtue of the FF sensor. You really want to argue with that kind of logic?

It's so much more fun taking pictures.

Sensors don't take pictures.....cameras do. It takes an entire camera to capture an image, that includes, lenses, sensor and software. I've stopped shooting raw on my 20D and Mark II. I hate the softness. Which do you prefer Mark, your Canon or your Nikon?

Hi Arka,

Apparently I was bad at communicating my thoughts here, although you summed them up perfectly.

Hi Osai,

I sold my Canon after using my D70 for about a month. My 1D was great, But I loved the Nikon.

But then my intent for this quesiton was asking how anyone thought that Nikno could up Canon or Canon up Nikon, unless you are strictly speaking form a PR perspective.

I have a D1X (for years), a D2X, a1DMKII, a 1DsMKII, a 20D and a digital rebel.

They are all wonderful. I get great shots with them all. BUT IMO, nothing compares to the 1DsMKII. It is not just megapixels. It is FF and the look of the images, the lenses, etc. Unbelievable camera!!

Heh I was asking why anyone really thought it was possible, and then why anyone should bother even if it was possible.

I guess I didn't communicate that correctly

I think Mark if you ever shot a D2x , you would never have asked this question. Resolution on par with the 1DsMKII at 3K Less , a pound lighter , easily the best metering on the market and a very compelling camera. Not that I care a whit about this kind of topic as specs and numbers don't woo me. The prints are all that matter to me , I needed a bigger file , I have it and it will take a Big impovement to make me think of another camera. I am looking to have this body for at least 5 years. The file is 70MB which is perfect for all I want in a 35mm style camera

Proof that there are always different strokes for different folks. Me, the aggressive Noise Reduction mutes the impact the 1Ds Mk2 has on me.

Now the 1Ds is another story altogether.

Alas I daresat this proves the poitn that I wasn't communicating clearly.

I don't see the D2X upping Canon, nor do I see the 1Ds Mk2 upping Nikon. They are both wonderful systems.

I was trying to question why som many people seem to care that Nikon should up Canon, and whteth upping another group is even really possible, since the nature of brand groups is often not intersecting in the first place..

It`s mostly human nature.
Some folks need to / want to think they have the best and having others agree with them reinforces the insecurity they continually have with the purchase they made.
It`s really that simple.

People that always have to have the latest gear because on paper it appears better, or technically it's the newest, or perceived as better, or whatever, these types of people typically aren't photographers, they're gearhead measurbators. People that suffer from this condition have personality issues that go far deeper than any photographic desire, to the point of psychosis.

I hope somebody kicks me real hard if I buy another 35mm bodied dslr in the next 5-7 years. I'm not even looking. I have found the pot of gold at the end of the Nikon rainbow, and for me, it's called the D2X. Life is good.
