Hey guys, I'm trying to help a friend out with her D70s, but I've run into a stumbling block. I've been preaching the benefits of shooting RAW, however we cannot get any software to read and convert the files. From everything I've read, my PhotoShop CS (w/ latest Camera raw 2.4) should support the D70. However, when I try to read the file in, PhotoShop crashed and shuts down! The same thing happens with her Nikon software that came with the camera. I've searched everywhere and I've never seen this come up on the boards. Is this a common problem? This is a D70s, is there a difference in the NEF over the D70? Any suggestions?
It seems that the D70s file is different than the D70 file, and I have read a few accounts of it not being able to be opened in photoshop, even with CS2 and ACR 3.1.
I am not sure what the best solution is right now, and I am not sure why the computer crashed with nikon software, but I would check our bibble and raw shooter essentials in the meantime to see if they can convert the files...
I really think this sucks, by the way, for D70s owners.
Markq, have you tried Raw Shooter Essentials? If you're running a Windows system, their latest version supports the D70s, and it's free It's a very nice raw converter, fast, and did I mention, free, hehe. You can get it at http://www.pixmantec.com
HTH,
Jack
PS: Get rid of the software that came with the camera. It is horrible at best.
Likewise, no problems with Nikon Capture then to PS elements for any tweaks.
A side note, not to hi-jack, but I always understood that the Coolwalker wouldn't zoom on NEF files. I find it will on the D70s NEF files, my D100 is a no go as expected. I suspect there must be something different about the D70s file. I just don't know what it is.
I can see buying nikon capture for a lot of reasons, but for nikon to put a camera out and then expect you to pay an extra hundred bucks for software to look at the pictures really sucks...
D2H, D2X, okay, I can see that a little more, but people buying a D70s, at least a large number of them are not going to be pros and arent looking to spend a fortune on that type of stuff...
The D70s is my camera, and here's my experience: the Nikon software will read the RAW files (Picture Project, Nikon View, and Nikon Capture). The Nikon software sucks something fierce, at least on a Mac. (Amazingly slow and processor and memory intensive, and lacking in features).
Photoshop CS will NOT read the files, with any version of ACR, in my experience. There is a work around.*
Photoshop CS2 WILL read the files, IF you update to the latest ACR, AND make sure to install it correctly (I did it wrong the first time, so I know). (The experience with both of these is on the Mac. Don't know if it's any different on the PC).
dcraw.c and the myriad of programs derived from it will also read D70s NEF files.
*The Photoshop CS workaround: Download the latest version of Adobe DNG Convertor (3.1) and Adobe Camera Raw for CS (2.4). Convert the Nikon D70s NEF files to DNG files with DNG Convertor (NOTE: it must be version 3.1 in order for this to work). Then, use ACR (must be version 2.4) to open the DNG files in Photoshop CS.
Hopefully this was helpful. Adobe Camera Raw is really great software for manipulating RAW files, in my experience.
Yeah you got problems! D70s raw files do not open in PS CS, only if you upgraded to CS2. And the upgrade for camera raw, 3.1 does not work in PS CS. But it should open with the trial vers of the Nikon Capture. Offcourse this is only 30 days good until ya hafta buy it(100bucks). If you've ever owned a capture version previously, you can upgrade free, but you will have to un-install any older versions first. I recently picked up a D70S as a back-up while my D70 went to Nikon for repair and got the rude awakening upon trying to open my raw in ACR.

Hey Jacko, good comments once again. I agree with ya on the Capture software but for now I gotta go with it cause it's free and ma wife's been counting my downloads lately, ha! But Yeah. I miss ACR though I just cant upgrd to CS2 at the moment.

I am using Mac OS 10.4.2, and had the following experience with Photoshop CS2 when upgrading to D70s:
I installed Photoshop CameraRaw.plugin v3.1 in both Elements 3 and Photoshop CS2 per specs, and had the following results:
- Both D70 and D70s raw (.NEF) files open and process fine in Elements 3.
- D70 raw files appear and open as they should in Bridge and CS2.
- D70s raw files appear in Bridge but without thumbnails or metadata.
- Despite the lack of thumbnails I can open D70s raw files in Photoshop CS2 via Bridge or directly, and edit and "save" after opening (including .dng, which then appears properly in bridge, including the missing metadata!)
So it appears to me that Elements works fine with D70s raw files, and that the Photoshop problem is with Bridge rather than CS2 itself.
Incidentally, I am also able to open D70s .NEF files in Graphic Converter, though I haven't tried working with them.
If someone else had a very different experience I'd be interested in hearing about it.
I just downloaded and installed the latest Bridge update from Adobe's site (Mac version -- I think it was 1.0.2). I then apparently purged the Bridge cache using Cocktail shareware, and viola!
My D70s NEF files now appear in Bridge as they should, including metadata! (They already open in CS2.)
Any luck with the downloads yet? I have a D70 and a D70s, I shoot RAW (or as Nikon calls it NEF). I noticed that I couldn't read the NEF files of the D70s with the old D70 software on my PC. I loaded the D70s software and it works. Elements 2.0 opens NEF files from my D70 and my D70s. (I know, Elements is an amateur program with very little options, but hey, it works for me for now)
