I could get by with just IBIS, panasonic has spoiled me rotten with that feature, and that feature alone is why OM and panasonic cameras are always interesting for me. I dont think sigma has ever had a camera with IBIS, so that might not ever materialize.

I don't find lack of IBIS a huge deal, most shooters use shorter FL with a compact size camera. However I think they should use the 45MP stacked sensor, because 1/40s readout is quite limiting, and I'd like to have cropping, digital zooming ability with a camera ergonomic is crying for small prime lenses, and doesn't have mechanical shutter. Also who waited a Foveon sensor are likely more satisfied with a high resolution sensor down-sampling 24MP is more Foveon like at pixel level.

So after my first walk with this thing: I think if it were more of a garden variety mirrorless camera (better ergos, EVF, etc) I'd like it a lot. It's fast, has great AF, and the files look good. The menus are fairly intuitive (and I appreciate how minimal they are).

With the rear thumb grip it feels pretty secure in hand, but the sharp edges suck. The screen gets pretty bright, but when I cranked it all the way up for a sunset walk, I also lost 20% battery in 20 minutes.

Weird camera.

I don’t mind the lack of IBIS, but a camera without a viewfinder, whether a rangefinder or EVF, does not offer the shooting experience I enjoy.

The simplicity, size, and concept are appealing though.

I won't buy it because it lacks IBIS and has sharp edges. But it shows even more that the slot for a modern rangefinder-style camera is open and looking for fulfillment.

Makes me want an A7CR II (or A7C III) with a stacked sensor, one more control button and a better EVF and LCD. But I am enjoying the A7CR that I already have, which seems like an implementation of the BF idea but with complex menus and customization choices.

I like the minimalism, I think combined with Leica Q3 design (EVF, tilting screen) with 45MP stacked sensor would be a great camera.

It may seem trivial to you but imo it's needed especially when the glare hits the screen and ones struggling to see anything. I for one can't stand a camera without an evf or some type of viewfinder and so I have a camera to get away from phone photography. So this is a no go for me until it gets one.

Trivial as in easy. to design Not that Sigma shouldn’t do it. I already said the lack of an EVF was a no go for me.

The JPEGs out of this thing aren't great (overcranked color, posterization of highlights). No profiles for RAWs in LR yet, obviously.

Edit: It appears its JPEGs actually just have too much bit depth for Preview on Mac to render them correctly.

A good viewfinder is essential for me, like many members here. That is the essence of photography – seeing, and seeing with the eyes and though a viewfinder is what this is about. Most of us are not of the generations who are used to framing a scene on a phone.

My A7RV LCD brightness is enough for daylight shooting, and I prefer LCD screen almost every time, so lack of EVF no problem for me. I almost have gone with A7CR, but I use the screen tilting (A7CR has articulating screen) with only 1M dots resolution, and the EFCS what ruins my bokeh in bright conditions leans me to A7RV (upgraded from A7RIV).

I have it on order, and I use my cameras, so only time will tell. Right now my travel camera is the Nikon Z50ii with the 24mm f1.7

I briefly considered both the Zeiss ZX1 and the Sigma fp, and I have previously owned a Leica TL2.. but despite my love for Sigma’s I-Series lenses, I just don’t understand who the BF is for.

It’s aesthetically pleasing in product images and the lenses do look great in silver, but it isn’t a camera I would actually buy today. I don’t think it would take much to get me interested though; an EVF (even modular) and some sort of wireless connectivity would be a start. Maybe they’ll make a mark II at some point and address this kinds of concerns, but knowing Sigma that’s unlikely.

Why not Foveon though? Is it dead?

As a sigma FP-L owner, EVF, mechanical shutter, and wireless connectivity are the three features I want to be a perfect travel companion camera. I thought they will at least address one of them in the mk II model. In the end they make this “beautiful foolishness” thing🤣

As for foveon sensor, I think we should set practical expectation about this one….

p.4 #15 · The New Sigma BF Camera

At having a camera with you when you need to take an unplanned photo. That’s the only situation where I’ll put up with only having a fixed LCD screen. Phones with 2000 nit screens still wash out completely in bright sun, but tilting screens help out a lot. Reviewers have already noted that the BF doesn’t have a bright screen, so it’s probably not even 2000 nits. Why spend $2000 for the pleasure of a camera that’s about as usable as a phone, but much less convenient to have on your person at all times?

I suspect the BF’s main purpose is part of their rebranding. “Affordable luxury.” Instagram worthy. That’s the function of minimalist industrial design. While I admit it’s a great looking camera, I don’t like the choice of aluminum. Products like some high end espresso grinders and computer monitors that are made of aluminum get dings easily, and they’re just sitting there on a counter or desk. Make the body out of titanium and add a tilting LCD, and it would have been even more beautiful and much less foolish.

This camera will sell extremely well.
I understand the ‘I have to put the camera to my face’ crowd. I really do. YOU like to frame your photos that way. Makes sense.
But, there are a lot of ways to make a nice photos. And you can certainly make nice photos via the LCD screen.
For those that complain about the sun: Go through your photos and post all your full-sun, middle of day, photos . You probably won’t find a ton of winners unless you live in an area that’s full sun is very tame.
I live in the subtropics . Brightest area in CONUS. My first camera (Sony NEX) only had a LCD. I made great photos with that camera .
I understand all photographers have their own likes and ideas of what makes a great camera. That’s great.
Nothing introduced by this camera (or any modern variety) will prevent you from taking great photos .

Full sun is basically 3 hours after sunrise to 3 hours before sunset. That could be a long time to be stuck with a lousy user experience.

People are focusing what they can't do with a tool, instead of the capabilities. I don't want to argue with viewfinder folks, I get it why this camera is not for you, there are lot of cameras with different quality finders.
I've tried imagine BF's shortcomings for my usage, because sometime I use EVF, I usually using tilt screen. And I've just remembered I had a camera without those functions, Ricoh GR3(x). There was a point I had both III and IIIx and almost sold my complete Sony gear (A7III), because I've been shooting only Ricohs for several month, and it was quite liberating time with two small, simple cameras. Now I don't have any of them and shooting with A7RV exclusively. I didn't sell them because the lack of tilting screen or EVF. I had issues in a few occasions when LCD brightness was a problem, maybe 2-3%. I sold them because of lack of usable tracking AF and high DOF (APSC and f2.8), I like to have more control on separation. And I just get bored my equipment after a while and want something different, maybe this is a GAS.
Other question is the lack of flash support. And I get the conclusion I've never used a flash outside, indoors sometime I use it, but if you using flash, and want good pictures you may know how troublesome setting up lighting, most time you need multiple strobes with wireless control, but that point I found TTL is unreliable. I just get tired of it, I have the most boring and unflattering pictures of crowded family events with on camera flash. For a small home studio I think a LED light even with higher iso is a better solution, because you can adjust the light before take a single shot, and I can tell you people haven't patience sitting for set up lighting, especially kids.
I preordered the BF, the A7RV is the SUV of cameras but I'm almost 40, I want an Aston Martin.

I stopped by the NYC Sigma pop up and handled the camera. Very nice in the hand, nicely machined metal, button layout seems good. Not particularly light in the hand once lenses are on it, but is at least pretty well balanced.

As a former FP & FP-L owner, I get it. I'd probably buy one had I not done the L-mount rodeo about 5 times at this point (SL, S1R, FP, FP-L, SL2).

I always tell people my Aston was the most exciting car I've ever owned. My heart would literally pound in my chest every time I put the key in the ignition...

...mostly because I never knew if it was actually going to start. Seriously. I got stranded more times in that thing than anything else.
