For those who own/shoot the Z9, do you *sometimes* get the hot card warning when shooting a long video?

Day before yesterday I was videoing (with the Z8) a new Monarch (just out of the chrysalis) and I got the "hot card" warning.

Thanks for your input.

Nope. I shoot 4K/120 in the heat of the Texas summer with Delkin Blacks, one of the coolest running CFE-B cards out there. Never gotten the message after rolling for 30-40 min straight on the Z9. The Z8 has significant cooling issues from what I've read.

There is definitely less thermal margin on the Z8 than Z9. The solution is easy, as Scott says - use the Delkin Blacks. It's the only card that should be considered for video use.

I have that card; it is the one that overheated in my Z8 and it is the very card Scott, and a few other people on this forum recommended. It is the only card I have. I like this card a lot, though I have nothing to compare it to. Here is what my card has written on it: Delkin Devices BLACK, 325 GB, CFExpress Type B, CO98264

As a follow up to his recommendation, Scott also posted when it came on sale.... that is when I bought it. Thank you Scott

In my case, I do not believe that the proper card is the solution.

At this point, I believe the solution is the heat sink or reservoir that I read that the Z9 has with its mass?...

*Is this heat sink what allows the Z9 and the cards in it.....to stay cool during long videos?*.

I still would like to see comments from any other Z9 owners who shoot videos along with stills.

Thanks

Have you set the thermal cut off limit to “high”?

Ricci showed that the warning won’t stop the Z8 from recording. The Z9 vertical grip acts as a very large heatsink.

i shot with a prograde gold CFB 4.0, and only had ONE hot card warning. I was shooting photo and video at a conference. for $169, it's worth a try.

His card is fine if not one of the coolest running. Again, there are other settings to check and a warning won’t stop recording.

Concerned that the Monarch would fly any second, I removed the card, and after blowing cold air on it I re-inserted it quickly.

Have not yet found anything in the Z8 Reference Guide for "thermal cut off limit" or similar searches.

No problem though (no need for you to do a search) because I will adjust when shooting video with my Z8....until I get a Z9.

I do not see any long videos in my near future. And there are a couple of other reasons I have decided that a Z9 in in my future. One reason is that it is A ROCK! It is the best that Nikon makes to date. It is a square 146mm..... smaller than my D850 with battery grip, and that grip lived on my D850. I will not have to wrap my wrist around the top when in vertical composition. And lastly...... it has a full grip for my right hand. I like it.

Thanks Scott and Snapsy for your comments.

I really do not know. *This overheating occurred as a result of several videos*.

I was trying to catch the instant the new Monarch launched while avoiding a hot camera.

btw..... it did gain altitude on the last attempt and I caught a short piece of the launch.

What do you consider to be a long video?

This is the only video on the subject you need to watch. Again, the warning means nothing, and when the thermal limits are set to high, it's a mere annoyance and not a show stopper.

8K video will heat up a lot faster than 4K video.
I don't shoot video much but got hot card warning from Z8 a few times but never to the point where camera shut down. It is much rarer with Z9 for sure.
Card choice is very important. Last year, lots of noise and complain regarding Z8 overheating when shooting birds with high FPS in local forum/web and from a number of Nikon distractors. Turn out that a few cheapskates bought expensive camera but was too cheap to buy decent CFExpress card and bought some unknown card brand (to me) that was selling 1 TB card for less than 256gb card from the usual brands like Prograde, Delkin etc.
so there was an uproar about how bad Z8 and overheating was until someone pointed out that it was the cheap card and not the camera. However, I highly recommend that card when you go out to shoot with Z8/Z9 and need to boil water for some coffee

What kind of video settings are you using? I typically use Prores HQ 422 4K on the Z8 and I haven't yet seen any temperature indicator on the Z8 (I use the Prograde Cobalt 325 GB for video). I have felt the camera get warm during (very) intensive stills shooting during sports events but no warning. With the Zf, with moderate stills shooting the camera's base feels distinctly warm to touch after a couple of thousand shots. This is understandable as the Zf camera is quite small (thin) and nevertheless uses the Z9's processor.

Reports indicate that the best way to keep the Z8 rolling is to use the right kind of memory card. You can find some data here:

https://www.thessdreview.com/our-reviews/cfexpress/delkin-black-cf-express-type-b-512gb-memory-card-review/4/

but that was done a while ago (before the Z8 existed) and there must be newer cards which were not tested. Card temperature vs. time is dependent on the recording format and the camera's ability to dissipate heat. Also there is the question of which temperature the camera's temperature warning is based on, where the temperature sensors are and how a temperature rise affects the shooting experience and practical results (noise could increase if the sensor gets hot, and card write speed is reduced if temperature rises too much - actually this happens very quickly in my Sony card reader).

The Z8 manual recommends the following cards (particularly for raw video):

Nikon 660 GB MC‑CF660G Type B CFexpress memory card
Nextorage NX-B1PRO-series Type B VPG400 CFexpress™ memory card
ProGrade Digital Cobalt 1700R-series memory card
Wise CFX-B PRO-series memory card

Nikon's Z8 approved card page on the web is here:

https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000044865&lang=en_GB

Neither mention Delkin though.

I have been happy with the Prograde Digital Cobalt card but it's quite small for the higher-quality video settings. If I were to shoot a lot of video I would consider Delkin Power as it is fast enough for my needs and is available at higher capacities. Given the current discount on the 1.3 TB Black card it would seem like a good option though it would be really nice to see all the latest cards tested specifically on the Z8.

I don't have a clue that is why I was asking. Most of my video c;ips are just that, clips. I rarely shoot anything longer than two minutes.

Me too

2 minutes or even shorter clips for me.
