I am actually pondering, but...I think I'd need a Z9 or a grip with the Z8...I hate small/ungripped bodies. I will have to really think on it, as that D5 has become an absolute favorite. I don't know much about ML, but I do know that I can essentially shoot in the dark with that D5, AF lock on just about anything and do minimal (if any) NR. So...lots to consider.

I hear you. I also have a Z9. Personally, I love the big bodies. You can find a used/refurbished Z9 for somewhere in the lower $3,000 range, I think.

Autofocus is the last thing I’d be worried about when transitioning to mirrorless, though. Tiny differences in operation are dramatically overstated on gear forums, but AF in the Z9 is truly a different world than DSLRs.

Appreciate that...mostly it's the freedom of shooting at astronomical ISO's and still have an awesome image at size.

I have both D5 and Z9. I understand your sentiment and I still love using my D5 after more than 300k frames. However I expect you would quickly take to a Z9. It will also rejuvenate all of your f mount glass with respect to focus accuracy. Not that the D5 was a slouch in that respect but I still have a large collection of f mount glass and I find focus to be even a step better with the Z9. I still feel the D5 is better at high ISO though. But the Z9 is not that far behind it. It depends on your tolerance I guess.

A lot to consider for me. Also have think about the learning curve...I know less-than-nothing about ML operation and behavior. There's a ton of info. out there, but that's a double-edged sword innit?

I found the basic setup to be somewhat seamless but I do a lot of manual control shooting for sports. But the layout of the two cameras allowed a quick transition to get the job done. There’s still a lot about mirrorless nuances that I don’t know due to my own shooting style and what works for me vs trying to learn everything.

Little bit of a learning curve for sure, but auto area works so well now that I barely use anything else.

On the high ISO images, once you downsize a Z9 file to that of a D5 file, you’d be hard pressed to tell any difference. To my mind, it’s a misnomer to say that a D5 produces better high ISO results. If you resized both images to ~1600 pixels on the long end, I doubt you’d be know which file came from a D5.

Same exact scenario with a D5 last summer.
Short story…worked my home owners hard and got nothing.
The D5 showed signs of life but in the end it was a paper weight.
Same result with the long lens that was attached.

In the very end I chalked it all up to user error and moved on BUT it did sting a bit. Lastly, a little more than a healthy portion of tequila with my buddies took the edge off at about 2:30am.

Took a couple of days to announce replacement plans to my wife. I remember starting the conversation with “ I have something I want to talk to you about”. She then thought something way worse was going to come out of my mouth and took it all pretty well :-)

Well...it works. D5 works...500PF works...I got nuthin'. Reads the card, recording images, AF, aperture, focus pts. Don't understand how but...there you have it.

Now I'll give it a good cleaning and decide if it needs to go anywhere to get pro cleaned. The lens has a gritty MF ring...not sure if that's of cost/benefit but any thoughts regarding going forward or potential cost...sling 'em👍😎

So...

KEH will not touch it...period. They say they can't guarantee the repair since it's water damage an so they won't do it.

APS was AWESOME on the phone...like they actually cared that I didn't get fragged in the fall, and they're happy to do the work, so...that's probably the route I'll go, although I will say, that Camera Service Company is local and they also said they'd be happy to do it.

Just comes down to whether I want to ship them to APS, who I've used before and were great, or use CSC to whom I can hand-deliver on Sat.

Reviews for CSC seem pretty good overall. Might come down to whether or not I have a good box.

My D5, 500PF and I decided to take swim in a muddy river today. As of now...about 2 hrs post...500PF is working save for a gritty MF ring. Who knows about the days ahead. My D5 is not...just a blinking batttery ico. I have it drying on an air cleaner...can't hurt. Surprising how dry it is inside...not dry enough I suppose. Any advice as to what to do from here? Does ins. cover this at all? I'm guessing not without a rider, but? Is it worth getting a local eval to see if these are cleanable/recoverable? Any insight is appreciated.

I'd pull the batteries, I know older Canon has another to keep the clock etc accurate, and try to dry everything out. I had one body cone to life long after, apparently dried out I guess

That stinks. I put stuff in the oven on very low heat, turn it on a minute or 2 is all (on mine, anyway,) trying for 100°-120°, you don't actually cook it (hopefully) of course

Since it's still pretty hot here, I might just leave it in the car in the sun. Water evaporates faster >100° F. Are you on a trip and need it or have a few days?
