p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · My Gear I Went Swimming...so...some questions.

My D5, 500PF and I decided to take swim in a muddy river today. As of now...about 2 hrs post...500PF is working save for a gritty MF ring. Who knows about the days ahead. My D5 is not...just a blinking batttery ico. I have it drying on an air cleaner...can't hurt. Surprising how dry it is inside...not dry enough I suppose. Any advice as to what to do from here? Does ins. cover this at all? I'm guessing not without a rider, but? Is it worth getting a local eval to see if these are cleanable/recoverable? Any insight is appreciated. I suppose if you shoot long enough....

Ironically...not in the kayak...just the last few hundred feet of a hike and a muddy riverbank that didn't look that way. It was quite spectacular, aside from a strained quad...I'm ok. Might miss my next hockey game but that's about it.

Thanks all...you are allowed to laugh...it's just stuff.

You'd need a specific gear rider for non-professionally-used gear to cover this under home insurance.

You clearly already tried to turn on your D5, which wasn't a great move. You're supposed to remove the battery and let it all dry out for days...it's not the water that kills electronics, it's power moving through it WHILE the water is present.

I'd be letting it drying outside in the breeze all day long, will dry out much faster than indoors. Rice has such fine dust I'd not use it.

Get both in bags of rice immediately. For the D5 - remove battery, cards, and open every nook and cranny. Refrain from turning it on for a least a few days with hopes to get it fully dried before putting power through it...with hopes of preventing a short circuit.

Had the same happen, same lens but with a Z9 where luckily it recovered and the rice/ziplock pulled out some minor moisture in the 500.

To help accelerate the process - I rotated the bag in warm sunlight to help speed up the heating...just be careful because too much direct sun could damage other stuff.

If there's no life in the D5 after a couple of days, I'd look at repair costs at APC or other Nikon repair places. Just be aware repair costs may be close to just replacing with a good, used body based on current prices.

Good luck!

Appreciate the well wishes and advice. It was on when we went in, so...not much say in that. I've had it on the air cleaner...if it's dry and clear outside in the next few days I'll get it out in the sun. Could have been much worse...it's just "stuff."

What are anyone's thoughts on putting it the oven on proof for the night (80-95 degrees)

I am thinking air flow is better than static heat.
IDK...

I had a similar thing happen to a D700 about 8 years ago. Made the mistake of turning it on without knowing. Something quickly shorted and it never came back despite copious drying with rice bags and desiccant packs.

There is a chance it may come back with desiccant packs, but probability is low. Sorry you and the gear took the fall but grateful your personal injuries were minimal. Likely could have been worse under the same or similar circumstances.

Proof often gets significantly hotter than that over time, i wouldn’t.

I am not sayin’, if you get my point.
About 20 years ago I dropped a Motorola Razor phone in to the edge of a pond. Nothing worked afterward. Thinking along your kind of idea, I took the battery out and put it on a sun-lit dashboard for the day, and the rest of the phone went in to a toaster oven set at 250F. With a thermometer verifying the accuracy within a few degrees. My thought was that it needed to be hot enough to boil-vaporize any water in the phone, but nowhere near hot enough to melt anything. 45 minutes later the phone came out to cool down. The next day, I put the battery in the phone and everything worked perfectly. I kept it for another year or more. I can’t say what I’d do if my D5 was submerged, probably a no on the toaster oven.

Think you need to start shopping for a Z9.

Glad you're ok, and yes, only stuff.

Replacement cost of D5 if you have the dual CF ranges 1600-2600 at KEH, Dual XQD is 2260, to give you a baseline for repair costs. I'd call KEH since they're closer to you, and APS, and get quotes from them. I've only dealt with APS for repairs and wouldn't hesitate to send something there.

Glad you're ok, but ouch, still painful. Once my friend got into a taxi with a bag full of expensive camera gear, and when he got out of the taxi, he forgot to take the camera bag out of the trunk.

Since then, we are both strong proponents of camera insurance.

Ouch! I think I'll enjoy telling my story more than your friend!
I did do the proof thing and the moisture that I could see in the lens was gone this morning, so...that's a start. At this stage it's just a fun experiment, as I've pretty much written it all off. Anything positive going forward is a bonus. Don't know about the Z9 as I have all DSLR F stuff. I was super-fortunate to get the D5 from Adorama for under 1500 and it had dual QXD, 35K on it and not a mark. Not sure I'll be that lucky again.

Yeah, good luck. If it doesn't work, hopefully you'll be able to find a suitable replacement. My friend seemed to be in surprisingly good spirits about it... but I'm sure there were some people on a sidewalk in New York that saw a guy cuss at the sky for a good 10 minutes, lol.

FWIW, you can probably find a used Z8 for about $2700. I only have one Z mount lens. The rest are F mount. No need to switch to Z, although hanging around in a gear forum might give you the impression that it’s necessary.

I am actually pondering, but...I think I'd need a Z9 or a grip with the Z8...I hate small/ungripped bodies. I will have to really think on it, as that D5 has become an absolute favorite. I don't know much about ML, but I do know that I can essentially shoot in the dark with that D5, AF lock on just about anything and do minimal (if any) NR. So...lots to consider.
