Over time my rule of thumb over 20+ years of online buy/sell has become if there's a LOT of questions / haggling before a transaction, it will only get worse during and after. Some people think they can get the rock bottom prices of direct peer to peer transactions with the no-questions-asked, no-hassle, no-cost, try&return policy of Amazon.com

Buying anything online is a hassle, but paying a buy and sell membership fee is an eye roll. Everyone and everything wants your $$$

Good point: more back and forth = time waster.

Examples:

"Your listing says the lens is mint, is there any problem with the lens?".

"I am waiting for a fashion gig and will buy your SL2 as soon as I get it".

I also sell via FB marketplace and Craigslist and get the same back and forth at times. Also the same "I have only $2,600, will you sell your Q2 to me".

Disagree. The membership fees here is more than worth it and saves hundreds of dollars in fees compared to ebay or Amazon Marketplace. Not to mention the buyers who abuse return policies of these large commercial platforms.

Running a website costs money. And fyi, the membership fees here is $, not $$$.

FB marketplace, Craigslist are free as is getdpi. But the hit rate here at FM buy sell is a lot better and feedback system gives some level of comfort.

All of this based on my 100+ buy/sell transactions here worth north of $40,000.

Indeed, FM B&S is one of the best out there, and the annual fee is often less than eBays take on a single transaction...

I think the overriding theme here is that in most every system, buyers are protected far more than sellers.. so it puts sellers in the situation of being very conservative. So as a seller, anything that sets off my "spidey sense" leads to me not doing the transaction. One bad transaction can cause more hassle/cost/loss than 20+ good ones.

I won't buy from abroad anymore either...Unless the shipper lies about value, I seem to get a $75-125 clearance fee + taxes or whatever...I don't really care what or why they are charging me extra, the fact is i don't get the gear without the extra fee.
Easy fix, don't do it again. Live and learn right?

When I sell gear, which, by looking at my profile is something I do almost all the time for the last 20 years, I make sure I'm watching the ads and have all my alerts set, because to me, customer service is very important.
New members? Depends on how they approach me. I'm pretty good at smelling a rat. But have been burned so I go by feel.

To the OP asking what is a new member supposed to do? I agree with Chez, get involved with the website, up your post count...The reason we have feedback is so I can see who you bought and sold with. If your thread count is low, I might PM a member who you've done business with to ask how it went.

Also to the OP, it's small minded to think that the buyer takes all the risk...Unless you're paying with a non fee method, we assume ALL THE RISK. You can lie about not receiving the item and I (the seller) get screwed by Paypal. You can say the front element had a scratch which was BS, or that it doesn't work correctly (if you change your mind) and... I get screwed. You can be an ass during the whole sale and I bend over backwards trying to make you happy, then you can give me Negative feedback just because you're an ass (it happens).....So, enough about no risk to the seller.

This forum is the best buy/sell platform available for gear, but it's not free, it takes a little money a little time and a little patience, just like anything else worth a damn in this life.

A few years back I was selling an Xpan here. Perfect condition. One prospective buyer was trying to get me to lower the price because he was ‘ going to beat the sh!t out of it and so the perfect condition didn’t matter’.
I told him perhaps he should look for one that already had that done to it..

Some people’s children….

Now that paypal reports transactions to the IRS if you use goods and services, I have seen a lot of people understandably try to use a fee-less system.
There is one big ticket item on FM right now that the seller is demanding a wire transfer of funds before shipping. So basically the buyer has zero protection.
Once it gets to this point - where the seller demands a fee-less system - if the buyer has decent feedback I think the buyer has every right to request payment after receiving the goods. Because at this point it is purely based on trust - and how do you determine who is more trustworthy here?

What’s the difference? One pinky swears to ship after receiving payment, the other pinky swears to pay after receiving shipment.
At this point you either meet in person, or use an escrow payment service.

I can be that escrow. Buyer can send me the payment and seller ships me the gear. Win-win situation for at least one party in this 📐.
