Can I ask what you get from DXO that you don't from something like LightRoom/PS etc?

Do you use it in conjunction with? I have never used there product set- Thanks!

@RustyRus, DxO provides an alternative to LR/PS. It's usually a personal preference. I for one, do not like the subscription model Adobe enforced and have been using DxO Photolab from Version 5 onwards. This enables me to upgrade when I need, and since I do not buy new bodies frequently, I am mostly in a position of not needing to buy/pay for upgraded software.

Also, the processing algorithms in DxO and the freedom/flexibility provided by the software suite meet my needs. I was always using the Nik filters extensively even in PS, and DxO purchasing Nik form Google made it even more attractive for me to switch over. For me, I can do all my post-processing, edits and crops in one software application. End of the day, each person has their own reasons.

I went with DXO a few years ago and find it really nice. The denoise algorithms are among the best, as good or better than Topaz and both generally reviewed as better than Adobe. Their optical corrections are also quite well regarded. They have correction and color profiles for each camera body with each lens. Its quite extensive. In recent versions they have added much better spot fixing and local adjustment tools. There are no layers, but it is quite powerful for most digital development and re-touching needs. I almost never have to take a photo in to Affinity for further adjustment.

One thing of note, is that while you buy a lifetime license you only get updates until the next version comes out. For example, if this November they release version 8 and you bought version 7 sometime during the year, you will stop getting updates to version 7. You'll need to buy version 8 to get updates or new tools, and this can include support for cameras and lenses released after version 8 is on the market. If you buy around black friday each year, I think its about $80 for a version upgrade. Quite cheap. I have skipped a few versions in the past, making the average annual cost quite low compared to an Adobe subscription.

PureRaw4 also got the update to handle R5M2 files. Works great in LrC as a plug-in.

As an aside. I bought a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7X running on the Snapdragon Elite ARM64 chip (32GB RAM).

LrC runs in emulation ok,
DxO PL8 runs great, and even exports a DeepPrime XD/XD2S noise reduced file back into LrC well, albeit slowly.
However, PR4 will not run (hangs) as a LrC plug-in or standalone. I expect PR5 which is in Beta (I'm a Beta tester) will run from within LrC. (I hope) So far not.

Exactly. I was on Version 5, and skipped Version 6, since there were no features that I wanted to pay for. However the incremental differences between Version 5 and 7 were valuable enough for me to pay the $80 during Thanksgiving and update. With the R5M2 being on the RF mount, I will gradually move from my EF glass to RF and not upgrade DxO PL till I complete the lens switch (so at least a year if not more).

Brian,
I bought PL6 in Nov 2022.My understanding is you got updates to your product version ie; PL6, for at least a year from purchase date. I have received a few updates of lenses mostly. Yesterday, I opened it and it said I had an update to version 6.19. I tried but could not get it to update. I downloaded the trial version of PL 8 and processed a few images. Very nice, IMO. This am I opened PL6 to compare differences, and got the update notice. I downloaded it again, and before clicking install I closed PL6. It updated today. I just ran an R5 MKII file thru PL6 updated and it worked fine. So R5 Mark Ii owners with PL 6 might try to see if they can update their version. Might be the same on Pure Raw users, just don't know.

I think that's right. They release on about an annual basis, so you get updates to version X until version X+1 comes out. To be honest, I usually buy cameras behind the leading edge (meaning a generation older than the newest) so I have not paid detailed attention to whether they add new profiles to older versions. Seems for your experience they may do that.

Slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me if there is a big IQ improvement from DXO PR2 to DXO PR4?
I haven't updated my copy of PR2 in some time and noticed last night there was an update available for this old version so I grabbed it. Didn't notice any difference as I think it was just bug fixes.
But now I'm wondering if it's time to upgrade to the latest ver 4. I've searched the net for any direct comparisons between these two versions but have come up empty.

PR2->PR3 = huge
PR3->PR4 = debatable; a lot more control, a lot more ways to shoot yourself in the foot

So PR2->PR4 = huger?

Thanks Stan. I think I'll grab this latest version. I thought about grabbing the entire PhotoLab package but I'm not sure I can pull myself away from LR.

They have a free 30 day trial of PL8 available. If you wanted to try before committing to PR4. I have used PL 6 kind of like PR, but on certain files try a few more options available in Photolab. At the time I bought it was not a lot of difference in price. You might get an upgrade price on Pure Raw that makes it a better buy for you. It will show when you are logged in to your account.

Yeah, I was wondering if they give any kind of upgrade price for folks that have DXO PR and wanted to step up to the full PhotoLab package. I might check that out when I get around to this.
I definitely don't want to dump $230 into it being that I don't know if I'd use it much other than the DN portion.

@lighthound, you will typically see the offers that are available to you when you log into your account. It does no harm to chat with a rep if you don't see any bundle/upgrade offers to see if they can give one to you. I have also updated out of line, PL5 to PL7, and was able to get an upgrade discount.
