I need a backup camera-

How is that R5 vs the R5mk2 when comparing Eye AF and fast glass-

For example- Using the 85 1.2 on the R5Mk2- My keeper rate is pretty much 100%- Same goes for very fast action. Its just stupid easy to use-

How does the R5 compare when just looking at using eye AF with fast glass?

I don't need fast action with this camera just really want a solid backup option that perfroms equally as well from an eye AF/street type of scenario.

I am willing to drop another 4k on an R5mk2 but I like saving money when I can:

Thanks for all the input from anyone that has used both cameras.

Rusty

The R5 is an amazing camera with really good AF and AI AF. Don't expect a 100% keeper rate at f/1.2, but it will nail plenty enough keepers to choose from and you'll still be throwing away tons of great shots. It's the best value out there at 2k lightly used. You will see variation in frame to frame (like a weeble-wobble affect) from the rolling shutter, but it doesn't affect the end result. I own a couple R5II's and yeah they're better, but if you can't get it done with the R5 then you'll have to look in the mirror and polish your skills.

I'd just get another R5II so that everything is identical (if you can find one). You can copy/paste your settings/customizations between the two, if both are R5II, but not between two different models. I know this is a minor point, but it's one of those conveniences that is difficult to quantify sometimes.

IMO coming from many years of using two cameras, sometimes identical, sometimes not, that when they're not the same I usually favor the newer/better one. And with the R5 still being very capable but also ~4 years old, there are some notable differences, such as e-shutter performance (non-stacked sensor vs. stacked), battery life, battery type (though the new "P" battery should be OK in the R5) and the customizability of the AF system. I realize the R5 would be a less used back up, but if you ever really need to fall back to the back up, it's nice to have the same performance, etc.

You're welcome!

I love helping others spend their money!

IMO the right move. With the R5, as good as it is, you would have just noticed the differences. It probably would have been annoying enough (like the on/off switch location) to have second thoughts.
