p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Early adopter R5II wish list for a Canon firmware fix

What would you like to see Canon fix on the R5II with a firmware update? I know a couple of these are unlikely, but it's nice to dream:

1. Allow us to customize the filenames for video files
2. Allow us to shoot 24p with the old Canon batteries (it only lets you shoot 30p with old batteries, makes no sense)
3. Allow pre-capture to be programmed to a button as I rarely use this but want quick access to it if needed
4. Allow us to turn off proximity sensor (this is for my water housings)
5. Allow us to select more than 1fps for the interval timer - I would be happy with options for 1-7fps
6. Move the heat warning bar graphic so it doesn't overlap with histogram
7. Increase ES shutter speed in AV mode to 1/16000th or if possible 1/32000th
8. Allow us to program the to M-Fn button to switch between stills and video like the R5, overriding the switch.

1. Fix the ES shutter Speed to allow for AV to choose a setting above 8000
2. Fix the issue where the EVF takes a while to display focus points when waking back up
3. Allow for remote HDMI recording to work by pressing the record button on the camera WITHOUT A DAMN CARD INSERTED!!!!!! THIS IS RIDCULOUS!

Other than than, very happy so far-

1. 4k 60p Fine mode (downsampled from 8k60p)
2. For the video auto-shutter speed in aperture mode to follow the limits set by the "Set shutter speed range". Currently it goes down to 1/100 even if the range is set to 1/125+.
3. Better wobble handling with wide angle lenses such as 16mm.
4. Improved stabilization in Raw 8k60p (it's ok the way it is now, but hopefully I can wish for better heh).
5. Accomodate glasses wearers for the eye focus feature (not as important since I find it unreliable in general, but why not).
6. ISO Speed setting in Aperture Mode (Video). Currently this is auto ISO only, but you can visibly see the video incrementing ISO. Would like it to be set to a specific ISO

1. Pre-capture toggle on/off assigned to a custom button
2. Ability to set pre-capture time into the past...like 0.3s, 0.4s, 0.5s etc.
3. Icon on playback showing which shots were captured during the pre-capture burst

Basically everything the A9III can do with pre-capture, I want the R5II to do also.

Fix the green screen camera lock up file delete flaw. I have to return the camera I currently have.

This will never happen via a firmware update, but if unicorns were real, I'd want the Blur/Out of Focus mode to work with RAW images.

(I'm aware that you can, in theory, use dual cards with RAW + JPEG split between them and set playback mode to the card with the JPEGs. Not being an owner, I have not tried this, but it's an awful lot of tap dancing to have to do for this one feature of unproven usefulness.)

Well, in the not too far distant future I see AI continuing to really simplify the editing process between the capture and final output. Whether it be in camera or in Lightroom, or a combination to technology, I do see AI picking favorites for you, and also editing the image in LR for you after it's learned your editing practices. Just like how Photoshop currently gives you a few suggestions/options for generative fill, I see that being done in LR for suggestive edits based on your personal style.

So after capture, AI will suggest certain frames based on sharpness and composition, and then AI will give you a few options of edited images using your common masks and adjustments it learned from your process.

I'm not sure how I feel about that as I think part of the love of photography is the process of "making the image" through the editing process.

However, for working sports photographers or photojournalists this will probably be a dream come true.

1. Downsampled 4k 60fps.
2. Customize pre capture to be used on a custom button.
3. Shutter angle in video (a guy can dream right)
4. I WANT the neural upscale shift to work on raw files!
5. Bring back the pixel shift option to shoot 400MP files and make it work like the Sony a7rv that accounts for movement in the frame.
6. Let me use false color WHILE having 709 view assist on.. today you have to turn off view assist to see false color, and because you’ll need false color often, I end up just viewing the log view because I rely on false color to expose.
7. Last but not least fix the black/green screen video bug that forces you to turn off the camera to fix it.

The power switch will actually turn the camera on before it locks into the “lock” position. Meaning If you start to push the power switch toward the lock/on positions it will trigger the camera to fire up. If you then let go of the switch it will recoil right back to the off position. I could see this being an issue during transit or in the camera bag where the body turns on due to slight pressure on the switch.

1. Fix the black/green screen video bug asap. We lose video, and we need to pull the battery to get it back working.
2. WFM assignable to a button, make it also in two sizes like the R5c. It is a joke that you cannot assign it to a button, you cannot say in which "info" screens it shows up and you cannot even put the menu item to MyMenu.
3. The video format menu is a huge mess, I doubt they will redesign it but is really confusing and bad usability. Fortunately, there is a C1-C3 that partially solve this mess.
4. IBIS wobble is better than the R5 but still not fully resolved with wide angles.
5. Magnify should work for video playback. Wtf that no C camera and no R camera has this basic feature? The funny part that it works if you shoot 180VR video so the code is there....

Not a prefect camera but is a big step up from the R5 for video and action photography.

1. Button assignable for preshooting. More options for preshooting customization (copy Sony).
2. Q menu should be able to control focus bracketing in a single on/off step
3. Provide an option to turn on Airplane Mode when the camera is turned off (I don't understand why this isn't the default??)
4. Autofocus stickier to fast moving subjects. The "sticky setting" should stick right to it until the AF-ON button is released.

I would also like precapture assignable to a button. The rate button is not used by me for anything. Allow us to use it for any and all other options, precapture and turning on bracketing are two which come to my mind. Give us an auto bracketing button one where a brief push turns it on and off and where a 2 second push turns on changing the parameters, number of brackets and bracketing interval, via dials.
