Much lighter than 24-70/2.8 (1.1 lbs). Not sure I really need 24mm and it seems to be much harder to make a 24mm zoom (neither EF 24-70/2.8 had IS, for one thing.) So it will probably be pretty sharp.

Sigma 28-70/2.8 is similar but this lens has IS. Potentially a big advantage on stills and video. Intetesting new lens

2.8 is a big deal, just like on 24-70/2.8 vs 24-70/ 4 or 24-105. Fast midrange zoom

Sorry, I meant photos taken with an R5 using the lens. My wording was not clear. If it can look OK at 45mp it may be a future buy for me.

I'm not a fan of having to extend the barrel to take a photo, even at 28mm!

Feels like a kit lens and not something to be priced at over $1000.

Maybe if they sell it as a kit with the R8 for $1599 or something, it'd be a good deal (like the Nikon 24-70 f4).

You appear to be new to fast standard zooms... non-extending would be a rare exception.

The new 28-70 is a collapsing zoom, it has a more compact parked position in addition to the normal range. You have to unpark it, extending the barrel, before you can take a picture.

This is a feature that's usually seen on slow ultra-compact zooms. The only other fastish normalish zoom I can think of with this behaviour is the OM 8-25/4.

If you don't like to unpark a collapsible zoom for taking photos, you can just leave it at 28 mm when not using it, at the size the lens would be if it wasn't collapsible...

Not really fastish, but the excellent Fuji GF 35-70 medium format lens is also collapsible.

That does depend on the lens. I've had a few lenses with that feature and only one I'd be comfortable leaving extended while storing was my OM 40-150 F4 Pro. The other lenses I've had with that feature were just too light in build to be comfortable with them in the bag extended.

Having been a prime user since my Canon 5D days, I warmed up to 24-70 zooms with all the video features now. I also use L-Mount gear that I use the Sigma 28-70mm and like the compromise of having a smaller zoom vs the 24-70mm

For me it works out, because I like having a fast prime 24mm like a F1.4 or F1.8 and having a 28-70mm F2.8 zoom works in the middle of my lens lineup and is completed by having a fast 85mm or 90mm.

So, Ill be on the lookout for this if price comes down and/or Sigma releases theirs for RF to use on my R8, to which I have the 24mm F1.8 already.

Defeats the purpose of having a compact lens.

Well Canon suckered me in on this one Pre-order done I think this will be a great lens on the R8 during our 3 weeks in Italy in 2025 at least I hope so but I'm sure I will also be packing the 24-240, and 15-30 with me as well

But it comes with some caveats:
- almost 29mm per the related patent along with the well known Canon optical distortions. Will be interesting whether it is really close to 28mm.

Patent: https://www.canonwatch.com/canon-patent-rf-28-70mm-f2-8-lens/

The patent says it is a 29-68 mm lens, just like its bigger brother. So the focal length is 29 mm at the widest setting, which implies that, after distortion correction, you get the field of view corresponding to a 29-mm rectilinear lens. Without correction the focal length is also 29 mm, but the field of view will be a bit larger because of barrel distortion.

So you want a lens that is as compact as a collapsible lens, but not collapsible? If that was possible, why do we have collapsible lenses?

According to Canon, this lens is weather sealed like an L-series lens.

You may explain more for me. Sure, it has by design a 29mm focal length (FL) on the wide end, but distortion correction requires cropping, so the resulting FoV will be equivalent to a longer FL. I guess the practically important question is what will the effective FL be. Or is my question wrong?

I don't think either the Sigma or the Tamron are collapsible. At least not where you must extend the barrel to shoot at 28mm.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

No, it will be 29mm after correction.

They're not collapsible, but they are also larger.

the Canon is 92mm long (I assume that's collapsed), the Sigma 102mm and the Tamron is 118mm.

It'd rather add 10mm if I didn't have to extend the barrel 30-40mm to use it. That's just me though.

That's me too. I've owned a number of collapsing lenses and the only one I ever liked the feature on was the M.Zuiko 9-18, because it became readily pocketable when collapsed (and jacket pocket sized on an E-M5 body).

It really depends if packed size or shooting size matters. Collapsible lenses prioritize the first, but the Canon isn't really enough smaller than the Sigma to be a big win there.

Still may well grab one of these, but that's more about weight and the common filter thread with the 15-30/100-400

Why is AF not going to be good? Just because it has an STM motor? How about we get our hands on it before we say what it can/can’t do

I've seen what stm can (can't) do in an RF 85mm prime so I rest my case. At 28 and maybe even 35mm it could be fine, but at 70mm it will struggle with fast action.
There's a price tag to be mentioned as well: A whopping 1320 euro. For 180 extra I can get me a Sigma FE 28-45mm f/1.8, and for 440 LESS I can get me a Sigma FE 28-70mm f/2.8. So it seams a little bit overpriced, at least at it's introduction price.

Any midrange zoom that starts at 28 instead of 24 is just a non-starter headscratcher. Those are the most crucial 4mm for any zoom in this part of the market.

I think that depends a lot on the intended usage.

Example: I’m still using a 5DsR with a set of four largish L zooms, plus the 100mm f/2.8L macro and an adapted Pentax MF zoom on a TS adapter. That’s all pretty big, heavy stuff.

I also travel, and in the great majority of cases I don’t (and don’t want to) carry the big gear. A zoom of this type could be all the lens many people need for such use. For what it does, it is downright tiny and quite light. (I also have the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, so I am acutely aware of the differences.)

And its availability doesn’t make those other, bigger lenses disappear. It just adds a useful option for different situations. It won’t be right for everyone — clearly not for you. But it could be very right for some. Kind of like the RF 28-70mm F/2 isn’t right for everyone but could be right for some.
