The 28-70 2.0 is MASSIVE, costs 3k and is just about worthless for everyone except wedding photographers or people willing to carry around a bazooka with them all day long for the normal range.
Canon needs lenses like this.
Hopefully its somewhat compact- If so this could be a real winner!

I have the 2.0L. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic lens and I have absolutely no regrets about owning it, but there is a huge range of situations where it's not ideal.
These are going to be in different galaxies of size and cost.
But it comes with some caveats:
- almost 29mm per the related patent along with the well known Canon optical distortions. Will be interesting whether it is really close to 28mm.
- Most expensive non L lens ever, but still no lens hood.
- Low magnification.
The R8 has fabulous AF at a great price, however, this is another lens having stm AF and therefor NOT unlocking that AF potential in the R8 price range.
With non-L lenses you can shoot your soccer with a 24-240mm and 100-400mm USM, but only on BRIGHT sunny days. This f/2.8 could have been a nice option; while range and aperture is perfect for chasing toddlers, the AF is not. I think that's disappointing. If you're shooting slow- or non-moving stuff only the 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM would do the job anyway, so it makes the f/2.8 aperture pointless imo.
Price is high as always to get most out of the early adopters. It will come down a lot for those who are patient.
It's compact (92,2 mm long collapsed, 112,4 mm for 28mm focal length, 138,9mm for 70mm) and light (495g). Here are the specs, MTF etc. from Canon Japan: https://personal.canon.jp/product/camera/rf/rf28-70-f28/spec. Could be a successor for my wonderful EF 24-70/4L IS USM when prices are getting better.
