Satan made me sell the 50/1.2 I once had. Just received this 40/1.2, courtesy of B/S board.

No sense in waiting for the light of day, with a 1.2. Also, no pretense this is art, but certainly a lovely lens.

One of only three lenses offered by Cosina on all four full-frame mounts. It was one of the first CV lenses of the modern era - a modern classic. No one else makes anything quite like it. Lovely image!

Might not call it art, but the lighting and texture of her skin is pretty artful. Congrats--I had one years ago, still miss it from time to time.

Just out of curiosity because I do not have this lens:

What would have differed if I had taken this picture with the Voigtländer 50mm f2.0 Apo lanthar with the following settings: f/2.0 1/40s 4000 ISO. 0.0

Could anyone knowlegable on the drawing style of both lenses jump in and give some explanation what I could likely expect?

My personal assumptions would be: slightly more contrast/resolution in the plane of focus. Minimally more DOF. Possibly some motion blur, but the subject is quite static so I‘m not sure about this.
Relevant differences in drawing style?

The OP may have a much better answer, but I really like this shot because of the pensive look it captures. I think the DOF is about perfect with sharpness and lighting drawing my attention to her eye and that look. If it was shot at f/2 (incidentally where I prefer to shoot the CVE 40 f/1.2) with the 50 f/2 APO Lanthar or any lens you would have her whole hand and the cup in sharper focus and the shot wouldn't be draw as much attention to her pensive look, at least that is my take.

Whether you have motion blur depends on if she had any subtle movement or was totally still. No way to know that unless you were there. I don't think motion blur would be a problem, but shooting at 1/125s does take that out of the equation. Alternatively this could have been shot at 1/60s and ISO 2000, which might have improved the colors and reduced the noise just a bit. That said, I think it worked well at ISO 4000. An f/2 lens would not have allowed those options.

Or that "underexposure," was on purpose to create the look and the mood of the shot. I personally love the way it was exposed.

The Lanthar is a sharper lens wide open especially across the frame. It also has a flatter focal field and better color correction. The Nokton wide open has a bit more "glow", but not very much. Yes, the Lanthar has more contrast wide open. The Nokton wide open has a much narrower center of sharp focus which helps to isolate subjects.

I own both lenses and use them for different subject matter.

The Nokton reminds me of an old large format lens I loved to use that was perfectly imperfect. In other words, while it is not as technically perfect as the Lanthar, its imperfections create a greater whole. I don't use it for architecture or large landscapes, but as a walking around lens its great.

I also love the pensive look here Jacques! Light is enough for me to "see" the composition!
Well done!

To me, this image has a very "cinematic" look. It's like a still (image) from a movie. Like it a lot!

Loving the atmosphere. I love shooting my 1.2 wide open as well. It's my favorite paintbrush
