I see that B&H has the new Manfrotto BLX-1 replacement battery in stock.

Are they any good? The Olympus batteries are pricey, but then again, the only issue I ever had with batteries was with third-party batteries for the Olympus Pen-f slowly expanding. It took me a while to figure out there was nothing wrong with my SD card that made it hard to get it out, but that the battery had expanded and pushed against the SD card. Since then, I'm wary of third-party batteries.

I hear you, John. I too had a third party battery swell a bit and made it hard to remove, but that was only one in one of my older Olympus battery grips. In recent times I have stuck strictly with OEM batteries, and have been pleased.

This new Manfrotto battery interests me, because Manfrotto has always been a solid company, and I doubt they would put their name on something they did not have full confidence in. I actually was going to order one to try on an upcoming birding trip to the Texas Coast, but talked myself out of it only because I don't really need it, and $60 will buy me a pretty nice seafood dinner while I'm down there.

Down the road I may still get one, especially if I see some good reviews -- the specs and blurb about the build of the battery sound promising -- and it is $40 less than the OM battery.

I recommend and only use OM System batteries and charger. In the grand scheme a brand x battery is not the place to try to save a few bucks,

Sage advice.

The customer reviews on B+H for other Manfrotto batteries is definitely mixed.

Cheers,

It's not just 'a few bucks' though for many people, the savings can be substantial, especially over time and multiple cameras / battery types (I've surely saved over £1,000 over 2 decades). I usually take 3-5 batteries with me on any trip, 4 off brand plus the original. I'm using FB as my off brand, at the moment, which have been excellent.

Over decades I've never ever had any sort of issue with any battery, from -50C thru to +45C (ambient). No charging issues, no expanding, no leaks., no issues at high altitude (6,000m). And I don't baby my gear, often hiking for weeks at a time.

It's human nature to look at worst case scenarios and think that's what they need to avoid at all costs. If we did that then no one would drive a car.

In this case, Olympus in the US provided an extra battery in the early days. Since I bought multiple bodies, I’ve got plenty of batteries.

Nice if you can get it!

However I've had numerous models from Pentax, Canon, Olympus, Nikon and Sony - this is where serious 3rd party savings accrue.

So you guys spend thousands of $$$ for gear and get excited to save $20-40 on a battery?

Strange isn’t it?
I was aware of the OEM vs non-OEM battery issue a long time ago.
Nevertheless, on one occasion(years ago) I purchased a non-OEM battery but only because the camera it was for was an old, rarely used, 3Mp P&S.
Yup…it took hardly any time at all before that non-OEM battery swelled and became difficult to remove. I actually found the whole situation far more comical than annoying.
Lesson learned and thankfully no harm done.
It’s been nothing but reputable brand memory cards and OEM batteries since for me too.
Peace of mind on always having working equipment at hand thoroughly trumps saving a few bucks per year on questionable batteries.
OEM battery - 100$
used for 10 years = 10$ per year.
I don’t know what non-OEM batteries cost as I do not shop for them…so… could they be 5$ a year in savings? Wow!
40 cents per month. Impressive savings.
