I've been working with a writer who is publishing a poetry book about rocks and one of the main photos he wanted was of what is called a dry stacked stone wall--one that's built entirely of stones using no mortar or cementing agent. I just returned from searching the part of Wisconsin that borders Lake Michigan where the last glacier pushed large amounts of stones ahead of it that were left behind when it receded. In order to farm the land, the stones had to be removed from the fields so a natural use for them was to make walls and houses. I found a few surviving examples in the area around Sheboygan and Plymouth. It's hard to imagine the amount of time and effort that went into building these things.
Cheers,
Brent

Nice images, enhanced by a great background story. #2 is probably my favorite, I like that long “S” curve.

Thanks, Rod. The second one is definitely the most impressive. I'm kind of partial to the last one. I like the bird house on the pole that is sticking out of it. I gave them six photos. No idea which one they'll use.
Cheers,
Brent

The writer would LOVE the stone walls around here Brent! Many, MANY have survived the Civil War. Yeah rocks, flagstone had to be replaced, repaired but no cement at all!
Look forward to more images!

Thanks, Douglas. The guy who built that long wall was in his mid-70s when he finished it. Talk about stamina! His name is Joe Weinbauer and he's now 86. He calculated that he lifted 2.3 million pounds of stone to complete the long wall around the Greenbush, Wisconsin, cemetery.
Cheers,
Brent

Thank much, Al. I'm not sure what's going on the cover, but you've given me a good idea.

Thanks, Dan. I'd love to have talked them into paying me to come out there for more photos but it was hard enough to get them to cover me for these in State photos. Your area was the first one that came to mind when they mentioned dry stacked stone walls. I've seen lots of Civil War photos that show them!
Cheers,
Brent
